Black SANDANA...anyone knows what is it worth?

Hi all!...

I was talking to my dad on the phone yesterday, and he told me something that made me wondered , i was trying to find an answer on the net but couldn't be sure of it. I was not supposed to post my question out here but can't find any better informative site than QL. (tnx to Qatari)

I am actually from Zamboanga city, a southern part of Phil., we owned a big forest land at another place(sorry not to mention the place name) near to Malaysia. Last month...there are 2 guys came to my grandpa house about buying a certain tree from our forest land, because they heard my grandpa mentioned that there are couples of tree in our land that when you burned it and put on fire it produces a kind of dark oil and gave nice smell. These 2 man came to our home and made some deal 1,000pesos/kilo. My grandpa agreed and was thinking of at least making money out of it instead of throwing and setting on fire.  But my grandpa thought that they will used it for logging e.i. building a house. But no! they want it piece by piece in sacks.

Out of curiousity, my dad asked them what to do w/ that pieces of wood? they said they will bring it to Singapore and/or Malaysia, for what? we don't know! and it was not the end. Why i am curious now is that, they came again and asking for more. So, my grandpa need to hired someone to travel to that jungle place to get those.

My question:  Does anyone have an idea what that piece of wood are for? a thousand per kilo for a piece of wood is not a joke amount in Philippine! but...I want to know what is the value of that wood? What is something in it to be worth?

My grandpa told me the name of that tree in our dialect tribe is Black Sandana and the tree also gives white flowers. That's the only description i know about the tree.

My sincere thanks to all,

One of my Indian friend told me that it is a very expensive tree. In India he said it is protected by the government. Lots of illigal loggers are really up to that tree. Im not really sure what is the value of it in the market. Azilina is correct, ask your dad tostop dealing with those 'businessman' at the moment and try to research more about the tree back in your land. Im from Cebu so I'll try also to contact some of my chinese friends about the tree.

Im also here in Doha and working here in Ras Laffan.

if you could help me find direct contacts regarding this stuff... i would really appreciate it, i couldn't check the local market in Zambo as i am here in Qatar. Oh, i'm sorry not to mention this, those 2 guys once told my dad that these stuff are use to mix in manufacturing perfume? But we dont know its real value in the market. Btw, are u in Qatar, if so...would love to meet you. I'm happy to know that ur mom is from Z.C.

If it's really sandalwood...it' expensive and your father is hoodwinked by those 2 shrewed businessmen.

Try to check the local market, much better you know any chinese businessmen(legit ones) in the city. I'll ask my mom (she's also from Zamboanga City) and my brother's wife about it. maybe they could provide any info.

Tell your dad to stop transacting business with these two till you get enough information. I'll try to help you out as much as I can. I hate it when people are taken advantage of...cheer up girl...just holler if you need any help...

singleDad, hi kabayan! i think i got the answer...u r right it must be sandalwood/sandana, i checked ur given link.

so if it's sandalwood, what we'll do? sinabihan ko na tatay ko itigil muna ang pakipagdeal doon sa dalawa. Is this sandalwood really worth it expensive? sorry for my ignorance. una bumili sila ng 100kilos, and now 200kilos! ano kaya yon? nakakaloka naman! saan ka sa atin?

In india, it is very common and a lot of enterpreneurs are rich having a farm for rubber tree..

check the characteristics of Rubber Tree and maybe it is the one..they will not buy that much if they cannot get the profit out of it right..

Thanks and Goodluck
