This was published thru Gulf times today stating the reason for yesterday's power outage.

Power failure hits DohaPublished: Tuesday, 13 November, 2007, 02

A POWER outage across Doha yesterday morning disrupted life briefly, affecting traffic, offices, schools and petrol pumps.

Outages, which lasted for more than three hours, were reported from such areas as Mamoura, Abu Hamour, Nuaija, Al Hilal, New Salata, Najma, Umm Ghuwailina, Bin Dirhem, Old Airport, Al Wakrah and Madinat Khalifa.

There were long queues of motorists at several traffic signals as the lights went out. Among the worst-affected intersections were those on the C Ring Road and near Hamad Hospital. Traffic had to be diverted. The disruption was compounded by a thick fog covering the city.

Inquiries found that a number of offices, including banks and insurance firms, ground to a halt. Even communication lines were affected for some time. Some Arabic and English schools sent children home as power was not restored even after a couple of hours. Petrol pumps in the affected areas were also thrown out of gear.

A Kahramaa official said the power failure was caused by problems in some of the generators at a major unit. About 20% of the total electricity output was affected, he added.

The official said the thick fog in the morning had initially slowed down restoration work. “However, our technicians could successfully restore electricity in almost areas, latest by 9am.”

He said power was restored in most areas in two hours. An entrepreneur said that with such long hours of electricity disruption, there could be more pressure on residential units to go for generators.

online Doha Security Market is off today with the 'pre Open' status. Is that because of power outage?
