[img_assist|nid=49850|title=Venezuelan Flag|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=|height=0]

The flag of Venezuela dates from 1811, the beginning of that nation's struggle for independence. The basic design includes a horizontal tricolor of yellow, blue, and red. Further modifications have involved including a set of stars, multiple changes to the placement and number of stars and inclusion of an optional coat of arms at the upper-left corner.

he flag is the one primarily adopted by the National Congress of 1811, consisting of three equal horizontal stripes. This original design was by Francisco de Miranda, who on March 12, 1806 hoisted a flag with three stripes, yellow, blue, and red, on his ship headed to the Venezuelan port of Coro on his second attempt to initiate an independence movement (Previously, in Venezuela the Flag Day was celebrated in March 12, until August 3, 2006).

The yellow band stands for the wealth of the land, the blue for courage, and the red for the independence from Spain. Flag Day is celebrated in Venezuela on August 3 since 2006, in honor of the disembarkation of Francisco de Miranda in La Vela de Coro, 1806.

During the first half of the 19th century, seven stars were added to the flag to represent the seven colonial provinces of Barcelona, Barinas, Caracas, Cumaná, Margarita, Mérida, and Trujillo that had united against Spain during the War of Independence.

Underground culture says the yellow represents the gold in our lands, The Blue our big rivers and coast with the Caribbean sea and the red the blood from our soldiers.

Canada is a country occupying most of northern North America, extending from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and northward into the Arctic Ocean. It is the world's second largest country by total area, and shares land borders with the United States to the south and northwest.

The lands have been inhabited for millennia by aboriginal peoples. Beginning in the late 15th century, British and French expeditions explored and later settled the Atlantic coast. France ceded nearly all of its colonies in North America in 1763 after the Seven Years War. In 1867, with the union of three British North American colonies through Confederation, Canada became a federal dominion. A gradual process of independence from the United Kingdom moved Canada towards statehood and culminated in the Canada Act 1982, severing the last vestiges of dependence on the British parliament.

Oh and by the way, I heard you singing Star Stangled Banner earlier - I tend to prefer the tune of Three Cheers for the Red White & Blue. We sing that a lot at football matches in England:

Here we go, here we go, here we go

Here we go, here we go, here we go - oh

Great song!

The flag of Wales;

Two equal horizontal bands of white (top) and green, and the red dragon emblem. According to Ancient and Heraldic traditions much symbolism is associated with colors. The colors on the Welsh flag represent the following:

White - peace and honesty

Red - hardiness, bravery, strength & valour

Green - hope, joy and love and in many cultures have a sacred significance

The Welsh flag is known as Y Ddraig Goch, the Red Dragon. The Romans carried banners bearing Dragon emblems - it is believed that legends about dragons were passed to the Romans from the Persian Empire. The Welsh hero Cadwaladr carried the dragon standard in the 700's. The Tudors claimed Welsh ancestry and their livery was green and white. The Tudors claim to the English throne was strengthened by this association. The Welsh flag has been officially used since the 1950s.

Luckily the Welsh have a good sense of humour, otherwise I'd be forced to start insulting Oryx ;-)

National Flag of Morocco

Proportions: 2:3

Moroccan Flag Description:

The flag of Morocco consists of a red base with a green outlined, five-point star known as the 'Seal of Solomon' in the center of it.

Moroccan Flag Meaning:

Green and red are traditional colors of Islam, which is Morocco's official religion. Red is also the color of the reigning Moroccan dynasty. The Seal of Solomon represents the link between God and the nation.

The Moroccan flag was adopted on November 17, 1915. Morocco gained independence from France on March 2, 1956. The 'Seal of Solomon' was added to the red flag, previously used by the reigning Moroccan dynasty since the 17th century, to differentiate Morocco's flag from similar red flags of other nations.

Good Morning:[img_assist|nid=50119|title=Spanish flag|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=|height=0]

The Spanish flag is a red and yellow horizontal triband (the yellow stripe is in the middle, and is twice as tall as each red band). A simplified version of Spain's coat of arms is pictured on the yellow band, towards the hoist side. The height of this flag is two-thirds the width.

The Spanish coat of arms depicts two crown-topped pillars of Hercules (with red banners displaying the motto in Latin, "PLUS ULTRA," meaning "More Beyond," alluding to Columbus' discovery of the New World). The two columns flank a shield that displays a castle, a lion wearing a crown, red and yellow vertical stripes, chain mail, and three fleurs-de-lis in an oval in the center. An ornate red and golden crown sits atop the shield.

Islam has not symbolized itself with any particular object or symbol but countries like Algeria, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Comoros, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritania, Pakistan, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan have used crescent or stars.

Turkey was first to have flag with star/crescent, then others followed.

Most Gulf countries do not carry these symbols

Thanks RED POP for the description of Nepal's flag.

The Nepal flag came into being on December 16, 1962. The Nepal flag is the only national flag which is not rectangular or square in shape. This triangular parts signifies the country of Himalayan country. It comprises of a sun and a moon which had previously human faces but the images were removed when the flag was modernized in 1962. It is being said that the national flag of Nepal anticipates, that the nation will last as long as the sun and moon is there on earth. The blue border on the flag of Nepal signifies peace, red stands for the color of rhododendron, the national flower of Nepal. The curved moon is symbolic of the royal house and the sun represents the Rana dynasty.

The flag of Malaysia, also known as the Jalur Gemilang ("Stripes of Glory"), comprises a field of 14 alternating red and white stripes along the fly and a blue canton bearing a crescent and a 14-point star known as the Bintang Persekutuan or Federal Star. The 14 stripes, of equal width, represent the equal status in the federation of the 13 member states and the federal government, while the 14 points of the star represent the unity between these entities. The crescent represents Islam, the country's official religion; the yellow of the star and crescent is the royal colour of the Malay rulers; the blue canton symbolizes the unity of the Malaysian people. This blue canton was originally chosen to represent a connection between the federation and the Commonwealth but this was gradually downplayed and eventually supplanted by its current interpretation.

The flag of Malaysia, which was first raised on September 16, 1963, originated from the flag of the Federation of Malaya.

That's my provinces flag :D. Good Old New Scotland.

There's another interesting tidbit about the Canadian Flag. If you look at it closely there's an optical illusion in it. In the shape of the Maple Leaf there are two faces talking, this is supposed to represent Canada's French and English history as well as the heated debate about what the Flag should have been. This is why the Maple Leaf on the flag looks nothing like a real Maple Leaf.

Anyway ....

There is a second flag which is associated with Scotland, the "Rampant Lion", or Royal Flag of Scotland. Although based on an older Scottish flag than the St. Andrew's Cross, it should, strictly speaking, now only be used by the monarch in relation to her capacity as Queen in Scotland¹. However, it is widely used as a second national flag.

The Rampant Lion flag flies over the offices of the Secretary of State for Scotland (who is the representative of the U.K. government in Scotland); that is Dover House in London and New St Andrew's House in Edinburgh.

[img_assist|nid=50071|title=Flag of Lebanon|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=|height=0]

From Wikipedia:

The flag of Lebanon (Arabic: علم لبنان) is formed of two horizontal red stripes enveloping a horizontal white stripe. The white stripe is to be two times a red one (ratio 1:2:1)—a Spanish fess. The green cedar in the middle touches each of the red stripes and its width is one third of the width of the flag. It was adopted on December 7, 1943.

It is a common mistake to draw the branches of the cedar in brown or black. Nevertheless the mistake is unconstitutional. The cedar must be fully green.

The red stripes symbolize the pure blood shed in the aim of liberation. The white stripe symbolizes peace, and the white snow covering Lebanon's mountains. The green cedar (Arz) (Species: Cedrus libani or Lebanon Cedar) symbolizes immortality and steadiness.

The Red Pope of Qatar Living

The Kingdom of Bhutan (IPA: /buːˈtɑːn/) is a landlocked nation in the Himalaya Mountains, sandwiched between India and China in South Asia. The Bhutanese call their country Druk Yul (land of the thunder dragon). Historically Bhutan was known by many names, such as Lho Mon (southern land of darkness), Lho Tsendenjong (southern land of the Tsenden cypress), and Lhomen Khazhi (southern land of four approaches). The origins of the name Bhutan are unclear; historians have suggested that it may have originated in variations of the Sanskrit words Bhota-ant (the end of Bhot – another word for Tibet), or Bhu-uttan (highlands). The word Bhutan as a name for the country dates from the late 19th century.

Bhutan is one of the most isolated and least developed nations in the world. Nonetheless, it has been described as the happiest least developed country on earth.[1] Foreign influences and tourism are heavily regulated by the government to preserve the country's traditional culture and national identity. The landscape ranges from subtropical plains in the south to the Himalayan heights in the north, with some peaks exceeding seven thousand metres. Mahayana Buddhism is the state religion and the population is predominantly Buddhist, with Hinduism being the second most dominant. Thimphu is the capital and largest city.

[img_assist|nid=50064|title=Flag Of Canada|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=|height=0]

From Wikipedia:

The National Flag of Canada, popularly known as the Maple Leaf and l'Unifolié (French for "the one-leafed"), is a base red flag with a white square in its centre featuring a stylized, 11-pointed, red maple leaf. Before this flag, Canada used variants of the British Red Ensign with the shield of Canada charged in the fly. The Red Ensign that took familiar shape in Canada was introduced by Prime Minister Mackenzie King after the First World War. From the 1940s until 1965, Canada made several attempts to create its own flag by holding national contests, but the Red Ensign still flew for Canada. A serious debate about a flag change did not occur until 1964, when a committee was picked by Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson. Out of three choices, the maple leaf design by George F.G. Stanley was chosen as the winner. The current flag was adopted in 1964. The flag made its first appearance on February 15, 1965, which is now celebrated annually as Flag Day.

Other than the Maple Leaf flag, several other flags have been created to be used by Canadian officials, government bodies, and military forces. Most of these flags contain the Maple Leaf motif in some fashion; either by having the Canadian flag charged in the canton or by inclusion of maple leaves in the design.

The Royal Union Flag is also an official flag in Canada, used as a symbol of Canada's membership in the Commonwealth of Nations and of her allegiance to the Crown. The Royal Union Flag forms a component of the flags of several provinces. In Quebec, the provincial flag (a blue cross with four fleurs-de-lis) is often considered a national flag along with the Maple Leaf flag, as is the Acadian flag in the Acadian regions of the Maritime provinces.

On the Guatemalan flag is the Quetzal - the national symbol of Guatemala.

The Guatemalan currency is also called the Quetzal and it is the most exquisite and beguiling bird. I have only seen once.

The bird has shimmering jade feathers with a long etheral tail and a red breast. It was a sacred bird to the ancient Mayan.

How the Quetzal Bird got its read feathers.

Tecun Uman was the brave prince of the Quiche Maya fighting against the conquistadores. The Queztal was his spirit guide. Tecun Uman was wounded by Pedro De Alvarado’s arrow and fell to the ground his chest bleeding. The quetzal flew down and lay on the brave prince’s chest as he laid bleeding, comforting him in his last moments and thus soaking its feathers in blood..

do you know DH Lawrences book the Plumed Serpent? In Maya: Quezalcoatl.

The national flag of Nepal is the only non-quadrangular national flag, and one of only two non-rectangular official jurisdictional flags in the world (the other is the flag of Ohio, USA). The flag is a simplified combination of two single pennants from different branches of the previous rulers, the Rana dynasty. It is the oldest official flag in the world.

The flag was adopted, with the formation of a new constitutional government, on December 16, 1962. The individual pennants had been used for the preceding two centuries and the double pennant since the 19th century. The flag borrows the basic design from the original Hindu design, which has been in use for more than 2,000 years.

[edit]Interpretation

The blue border denotes peace and harmony that has been prevalent in the country since the age of Gautam Buddha, who was born in Nepal. The crimson colour is Nepal's national colour, and it indicates the brave spirit of the Nepalese people. The triangles do not represent Nepal's mountains, but rather denote that Nepal is a Hindu nation[citation needed]. The red triangular flag has been a Hindu symbol of victory since the time of Ramayana and Mahabharata. The depiction of celestial bodies represents permanence, the hope that Nepal will last as long as the sun and the moon. The moon symbolises that the Nepalese are soothing and calm, while the sun symbolises fierce resolve. The moon also symbolises the shades and the cool weather of the Himlayas whereas, the sun symbolises the hotness and the high temperature at the lower part (Tarai) of Nepal.

Ok..still can't figure out how to post a pic, so here's some of the history....

George Washington is credited for saying: "We take the stars from Heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes shall go down to posterity representing Liberty."

American ships in New England waters flew a "Liberty Tree" flag in 1775. It shows a green pine tree on a white background, with the words, "An Appeal to Heaven."

The Continental Navy used the flag, red stripes, on a white background, rattlesnake in the middle, with the warning, "Don't Tread on Me," upon its inception.

The Grand Union, it was flown over Prospect Hill, overlooking Boston, January 1, 1776. In the canton (the square in the corner) are the crosses of Saint Andrew and Saint George, borrowed from the British flag.

By 1818, the union consisted of 20 states. A Congressional act mandated that the number of stripes be fixed at 13 and that one new star was to be added for each new state, the July 4 following its admission. However, nothing was written about what arrangement the stars should be in.

The United States flag today. The 50th star was added on July 4, 1960 for Hawaii, which entered the Union on August 21. 1959.

May She proudly wave....

The Mexican flag has an eagle, holding a serpent in its talon. It is perched on top of a prickly pear cactus; the cactus is situated on a rock that rises above a lake. The coat of arms is derived from an Aztec legend that their gods told them to found a great city where they saw an eagle capturing a serpent.

This city was founded in 1325 and called Tenochtitlan which is now Mexico City. the lake is Texcoco where the ancient Aztecs used to cultivate plants on floating bales.

Unfortuantely I don't know how to upload a picture :(

It really is a majestic flag.

Here's a bit of history for you all.

Qatar, Bahrain and Dubai used to all share similar flags.

In fact, Qatar's flag used to be red.

When did it change to Maroon?

It was actually a mistake. An experimental dye was used at the time to prepare the flags, however after being left out in the sun for too long, the red changed to the Maroon (or Anaby) also officially known as Qatar Red :)

The white represents peace and the "red" the blood of the people.

[img_assist|nid=50026|title=Flag of Greece|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=468|height=313]

(Freedom or death)

The flag of Greece (a.k.a. ''γαλανόλευκη'' that is translated as blue & white)has 9 horizontal stripes in (alternating) blue and white and a white cross in a blue square field on its top left side.

Its 9 stripes correspond to the 9 syllables of the phrase "Ελευθερία ή Θάνατος" ("Freedom or Death", " E-leu-the-ri-a i Tha-na-tos"). The five blue stripes are for the syllables of "Έλευθερία" and the four white stripes for "ή Θάνατος".

Moreover, the 9 stripes also represent the 9 Muses of Ancient Greek mythology, the deities of astonomy and certain forms of arts and literature.

Its colours have 2 interpretations: they represent the sea and its waves and also the sky with white clouds.

The Philippine Flag was first unfurled on June 12, 1898, when Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo declared independence from Spanish rule. It was made by Marcela Agoncillo,in Hong Kong where some of the Filipino patriots lived in self-exile.

Each part of the Philippine flag has a specific meaning as follows:

The blue field stands for common unity and the noble desires of the Filipino people.

The white triangle with equal sides of the flag is symbolic of equality among men.

The white field stands for purity.

The sun stands for the gigantic strides that have been made by the Sons of the land on the road to progress and civilization.

The eight rays of the sun in the triangle represent the first eight united provinces that revolted for independence - Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Manila, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga and Tarlac.

The three stars in the triangle stand for the three major geographical divisions of the country which are Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

The red field symbolizes the eagerness of the Filipino people to shed blood in defense for their country.

Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.

THE SWISS FLAG

Among the flags of contemporary European countries, that of Switzerland is one of the most ancient and one of the most modern. It has a white cross in a red field; the cross is the same length on all sides and each arm is one-sixth longer than its width. The flag looks back upon 700 years of history. To trace the origin, one must go back to beginning of the Confederation. By the early Middle Ages the cross was commonly used on coins and seals and, as a symbol of the Christian faith, it was carried into battle on the banners of the various warring parties.

Documents and records show that the white cross, which appeared on the banner of Schwyz (one of the first Cantons which gave its name to Switzerland) in the year 1240, had been bestowed upon the Canton by the Emperor Frederick II as a token of its freedom. And from that time onwards, the citizens of the Confederation used a white cross, made of long strips of linen, as their common sign in battle to distinguish themselves from their enemies. Every man in the army either wore it on his tunic or on his armor. Although each Canton had its own flag in battle, every Swiss carried the white cross as his battle standard.

As the national flag, the white cross first appeared on a red background on the Confederation's seal in 1814. It has been officially in use since 1848, when Switzerland was transformed from a loose federation of different Cantons into the present Confederation with a central government. Its acceptance as the national flag is mainly due to the initiative of General Dufour.

The use of the red cross on a white background, which is actually the Swiss flag reversed, was granted to the International Red Cross to commemorate the organization founded by Henri Dunant, citizen of Geneva. Indeed, the plenipotentiaries of 35 nations, assembled in Geneva on July 6, 1906 to revise the "Geneva Convention," stated as follows in the enacting clause concerning the symbol of the International Red Cross: "To do homage to Switzerland, the heraldic arms of the Red Cross on a white field, which is formed by reversal of the Swiss Federal arms, shall be maintained as a distinctive emblem of the medical services of most armies.

This is a gross simplification. In fact, colours in flags rarely mean anything - there are soi few available. On the cantonal flags, the red represented, as it still does on many flags, freedom - the freedom of each canton to govern itself independently of anyone but the Holy Roman Emperor. The white cross was added to the dress of the Swiss because every nation in Europe employed Swiss mercenaries from time to time, and they didn't want to end up fighting each other.

Note also a curious coincidence: Because it was originally a battle standard, the Swiss flag is square. The only other national flag of that shape is the flag of the Vatican - which is also the only state left which employs Swiss mercenaries.

A few days before India became independent on August 1947, the specially constituted Constituent Assembly decided that the flag of India must be acceptable to all parties and communities.[1] A flag with three colours, Saffron, White and Green with the Ashoka Chakra was selected. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who later became India's first Vice President, clarified the adopted flag and described its significance as follows:

“ Bhagwa or the saffron colour denotes renunciation or disinterestedness. Our leaders must be indifferent to material gains and dedicate themselves to their work. The white in the centre is light, the path of truth to guide our conduct. The green shows our relation to (the) soil, our relation to the plant life here, on which all other life depends. The "Ashoka Chakra" in the centre of the white is the wheel of the law of dharma. Truth or satya, dharma or virtue ought to be the controlling principle of those who work under this flag. Again, the wheel denotes motion. There is death in stagnation. There is life in movement. India should no more resist change, it must move and go forward. The wheel represents the dynamism of a peaceful change.[2]

A widely held unofficial interpretation is that the saffron stands for purity and spirituality, white for peace and truth, green for fertility and prosperity and the wheel for justice
