I need suggestions on what to do in India???

zinc
By zinc

I am taking my family (3 adults and 2 toddlers) to India for July through to August. We will land in Mumbai on 1st July, and I really have no set plan as to what to do or expect while I am there???
This is a spur of the moment decision, and I expect will come with loads of challenges.... However we are keen to experience something different and to broaden or horizons by stepping into the unknown.

As we are working on a budget, We certainly don't want 5 star luxury. We would prefer to see a bit of the country and experience India for its diversity and beauty...

Can anyone suggest places to visit, things to do, and the best ways to get around, while we are there.
It would also be great if we could find reputable and reliable contacts in India, who can help with some sightseeing options...

any afordable and realistic suggestions would be welcomed....

Since you have 40 days...u can divide all of it into 4 parts and visit the north, east or central, west and south of India.

Since u are landing in Mumbai...go around the places there first (the posts above have given many nice places to see around in Mumbai...including goa if u intend to be on beaches ..)

Then may be u can move towards north... u can land in Delhi (there are several cheap flights between Mumbai and Delhi)...have an idea of the capital..and from there u can go to near by places like Chandigarh, Jim corbett national park (u can enjoy the loghuts there, u need to book before u go there ...on the way to it is there booking office...I do not remember it offhand but may be if I remember will keep u posted if u are interested... I am not sure if it can be booked online), Ranikhet, Agra... Nainital can be a good hill station...if u like or u can leave it to the south india such as Kodaikanal... Simla in north may be not a good option as it is more of commercialised...Kodaikanal still has that charm...moreover I think it wouldn't be raining there at that time..you can then also go over to Rajasthan specially to Jaipur and Udaipur..

Moving down u can stop by at Panchmarhi in MP (Madhya Pradesh).. if u like to see some heritage of India u can visit Ujjain also.

Coming down to South, you can visit Kodaikanal near Madurai... then Bangalore, Mysore (do go to Vrindavan Gardens there), Ooty and then move on to Kerala...

East I have not mentioned anything as I do not know much about it except for Darjeeling... may be someone here can advice you...

Wish u a comortable and enjoyable holidays...

P.S. If u are planning to travel around by urself...u need to start booking right away as on some flights u can get good discounted rates if u book in advance such as Jetlite...etc. Train ticekets can be booked now 90 days in advance.

Mumbai

Agra

Jaipur

Bangalore

Goa

Kerela

there are 7 - 14 day rail tours that I've seen, but they never quote prices until you book... so it's difficult to decide.

If I could do a two good tours that will cover different sights and cities, then I'm sure the 40 days will fly bye quickly!!!

I know that I will never have enough time to see all of India... Maybe next time I will do the Himalayas, Nepal, Bangladesh and the Eastern Half of India....

we have beautiful lanscapes in Africa... and I am quite an outdoors person, I also like to learn about different cultural heritages, so I would love to visit some historical sights...

my wife and Neice would love to do some shopping and we have two young daughters aged 2 and 3.... so this will be a huge challenge for them as well....

I don't mind seeing some of the beaches, but that is not the primary reason for going... By the time I leave there, i would have liked to expereince India and a prat of what it has to offer... mumbai i am told is huge, and i am not that eager to spend too much time in the big cities!

thanks for the responses so far though.... really appreciated!!!!

Since you have 40 days I think you have enough time for a round trip. Kerala is nice but dont miss the hills(Manali, Shimla, Ladak?) but make sure its season time and you get guides becasue sometimes they close tourism to those places becasue of the rains. I dont think you will be able to enjoy much in Goa becasue it'll be raining cats and RIZKS there:) But you can go there for a few days. If you want to go to some good beaches there are some in Karnataka like Gokaran(its supposed to be a Virgin beach) and Devbagh and Manglore.

There is no rail pass as far as I know but you will have to book your train in advance. Since there will be five of you you can travel first class or 2-Tier AC. Flights are also cheap. First decide what kinda holiday you want. For eg: you wanna laze around beaches or you wanna do the hills or the jungle camping kinda holiday. Believe me in India you have all the choices.
