Time for some changes around here.

By smoke

Not to criticize or anything but as a member i feel its about time we had some changes to the site and the way things are working around here. Just gonna list down what I feel as my personal opinion and i'd like other's inputs as well. I think its time to give Qatari or the other admins a shake up, we are the people in the end that make the site what it is, and as such we need to find it easier to use this website.

1. In the Recent Posts, its really stupid to not have a filter system. As a user i'd like to see topics posted just today or in the last 2 days. Sometimes i know how many days back the topic was posted but hell if i'm going to keep clicking NEXT every time to see that the topic reached page 9. I dont always remember who posted the topic to use "search" or i dont always remember the Title of the topic. Filters should be also available by Ascending or descending order of Author name.

2. Whats up with the authors of their own posts not being able to edit or delete their posts? This must be the first forum that i've come across that doesn't have this option. So many times i see double posts and we have no option to delete it. Many times i make mistakes when i post a thread that gets over looked even after double checking or by me clicking submit in a hurry. I want the option to go back and edit it rather than look like a fool or wait till the "mods" come rescue me.

3. Filtering people i dont like: Sometimes there are users whose posts I do not want to see. YES there are ways to filter out such users. There should be like a recycle bin where i can drop all the users whose posts i do not wish to see when i open a thread. I've seen it done on other forums i think that would bring about a lot of peace on QL.

3. MODS: Seriously you people either think you are something great and untouchable or you are just too shy to be NAMED! Yes any online forum shows you who are the mods, coz mods are none other than the users themselves. What gives u the right to be anonymous? Explain to me your reason of thinking that by being anonymous you are being fair? In this case we have a RIGHT to know who the mods are by their QL id so we can judge you the way you judge us. I want to know how many mods are there on QL, coz most of the time i'm not sure the "contact Us" button even works, coz we dont get replies back from these anonymous mods.

4. Dont give me that crap about mods have day jobs too so i shouldn't expect much from them. There should be at least 4 mods in each forum section whose QL ID are displayed on top, so people know that QL ID so and so is monitoring this section. These mods should be regular posters. Mods have a responsibility towards the Forum as well and should be a person/s who not only pops in from time to time to Remove a topic or edit a post when they have time on their hands.
I'm sure you wont run out of users to volunteer as mods to take charge of different sections like the classifieds/Qatarliving Lounge etc look around you there are so many trust worthy users doing so much in the name of QL promoting your website. A handful of mods cant always be around when needed so spread the power.

5. Have a section called Junk Yard to make things easier for you. Give US the option to vote if a particular topic stays or it should go(religious bashing/racism/repeated posts) if it votes to go, move it to the Junk Yard section that you can come and delete it at the end of the week or month. I hate seeing all those "removed by mod" in the middle of other titles after almost every two titles. Dont make the site messy.

6. We sometimes need to have a poll too why cant i set up a poll?

This is what i can think of for now...and i wont have the option to come back and edit this to add something if i seem fit...which SUCKS!

Rant mode ON.

Mandilulur again this site isn't the people's property to threaten the owners or people running it the way they want. There are rules laid down which must be followed by everyone and if the mods are doing their job according to the book no one should have any issues or make threats right?

I dunno, guys, it seems to me that there is a small but significant minority here on QL that would make it somewhat perilous for a Mod to give up his/her anonymity. I've seen language and threats that curl my (normally staight) hair. I just don't think that people who are basically doing a good job should be subject to such harassment and even possible personal danger. Sorry, I believe there are a few wing-nuts out there and I wouldn't want to knowingly put anyone in their line of fire.

I too Second Smoki -

If the Owner and THE MODs are not in mood to accept whatever is suggested by the regular users...

who definitely deserve more respect than replying back as "take it or leave it".....

they are the reasons why QL is whatever it is today....

If you know anyone who is mostly in reading mode.. ask them... they log in jus to check posts of few usernames....

and Smoke's... tops tht list.... :p

this forum is yet another reminder to MODs n Owner....

this site is no more fun posting in....

Do you Guyz have ideas to make it better for good????

And its the QL which needs people... and not people needing the QL....

And being a small city/country... even if few start to foul mouth about the site... it spreads real fast .....

It ll loose the Classified too Sooner or later...

I meet majority of the fellows in Facebook and its more fun chatting with them on FB than QL these dayz....

Honest Feedback.. :)

Well looks like the admins took one step in the right direction by creating a religious teaching's group for all those religious discussions. but just a couple of questions to them. Will everyone be able to see these topics? I only ask coz thats the way it is with the other groups. So perhaps you should add this to your list of Changes TO DO list: Group topics stays in Groups and dont appear in "Recent Posts". Shukran :)

Tallg i never said it would make the site better, it would make moderating better when mods know they have to think twice about their actions rather than hiding behind the cloak of anonymity with no one to challenge their decision on the basis they can do what they want to do without anyone knowing who exactly is doing it. Also not saying that the mods are doing a bad job completely, it will also help in identifying the right people to contact instead of always relying on the "contact us" option and get frustrated for not getting prompt replies. My personal issue has not been answered now may be 4 months. so whats the use of the contact us? who are we contacting? the walls?

The users of QL are awesome. You guys are what make this site. I use QL not because it is an amazing, slick, easy to use, great looking bit of software that never crashes. But because I think it's users are top notch.

But I must agree that for a site with such high quality input, you all deserve a better vehicle to use. It's a shame the owner of QL can't see that. Because who know what competitor is planning to steal the QL crown. And posts like this one could well be making potential developers itchy. Come on Mr. QL whoever you are, wake up and smell the coffee. Take a good look at what you have built and don't think you are so safe that you never need to do anything to improve.

Again when it comes to moderating a online forum the responsibility cant be laid on the shoulders of only those you think or know personally. Trolls can be easily controlled if every new user is supposed to wait 24 hours before they post their first topic, or every user cant post a new thread within 24 hours gap. There should be certain Quota allocated for users per day to post topics this way only important issues will be given preference to be posted if they feel its something that needs urgent discussion. Just another random thought.

By someonenew• 13 Oct 2009 10:21

Mods can get a lot of their blocking jobs done automatically. If you create a rule on certain words that are offensive those words need not be removed manually. Another rule can be created that if a user uses blocked words 'n' no: of times he automatically gets warned. If he gets warned 'n' no: of times he gets banned for 'n' no: of days. When things are done by a machine the option of partiality does not exist. Then the Mods can focus on screenign topics and posts.

"Ali Baba and 40 thieves" are now "Ali Baba and 30 thieves" ; 10 were laid off.

Mods are 3 or 4? and they hve difference in their tolerance levels!! which is clearly visible on board.

TROLLS ; When any tom dick and harry knows XXX is a troll which was YYY who was banned by MODs earlier, why cant the MODs act?? instead of waiting for him to digest and shit allover the forum??

for one thing, managing such a site with members in so much diversity in itself is a challenge.hats off to the great mods for that!

but smoke has indeed put down some valid points there and i do hope at least a few of them will be put into practice...just to keep the site going,if not for anything else....coz from the looks of it,people are just using it to voice stuff they'd never do with their actual identities revealed....exclude me,though.whatever i speak on any forum topic,i am bold enough to say the same things in any public gathering.

Then again, we all know how things are run in Qatar. There's a word called maintenance that doesn't exist...

I guess all we can hope for is that one of the admins sees this thread [which they probably have, and done nothing] and takes some of the points into consideration. Personally, I think something should be done about the site layout. It's terribly hard to find a thread which you've previously posted on.

Most forums give you a list of topics which you can expand and then you'd have a list of threads concerning that topic. Would make my life a whole lot easier, but who am I to complain haha.

Darude ever wonder why trolls suddenly started popping up more over these last few months than ever before? Think of it like stubborn kids that feel they were wrongfully punished and just want to take revenge. Half of these people are just friends of QL users in another country..we cant do much about them now can we? Who all are u going to ban? A ignore option seems more appropriate than banning. The more you ban the more id's will spring up to get back at the Mods for banning them. Simple child psychology applied here :P

Yeah, I would love to have the " Invisible button" to mark some ids as "spam" and then they become invisible to me.

I believe the options the Site Owner has to modify the "source code" of the site is quite limited...unless of course the guy is a very good programmer himself.

In that sense the "Invisible Button" would not be an option ...I guess.

thing is you need to make friends to run everything smooth on this site. if the newbie is getting odd ignore him

more over when members start feeding the trolls and then get back shit then they all start complaining and few will join the troll to stir it up more like the recent 2 were banned and are now whininig all over the forum for their ids.

Which is why mod names have to be displayed or made known. Mods can also be changed if the people think they are doing a krap arse job. Also when u know X and Y is a mod people can pm X or Y directly instead of thinking their complaints all go to some automated reply system which might or might not be seen.

There are some moderators who only watch others and not post anything...their job is only to check who is breaking the guidelines...and even fi they post they use a different id.. in that case it wont make much of a difference if its X or Y.

But do you think the owner of the site will give the MOD privileges to a dumboo?? if he want to maintain the standard of his site??

Good suggestions smokey....why would you be banned? no way...

But am not in the opinion of reveling the Mods identity...for the simple reason that as you said if everyone start judging them it will be even worse than now. Even with wild guesses some members accusing Mods for being unfair with them people and fair with their friends... that will end up in more conflict.

I've seen many regulars getting away with sarcastic direct attacks on new users older users and the anonymous mods seem to "accidentally" not notice these comments. How fair is that? Its not like those regular posters are doing anything useful for the site besides their sarcastic remarks. I dont see them taking part in get togethers, or charity or volunteering events..so why special treatments? Oh wait they are your drinking buddies right?
