Say Anything...(1989)
Stars: John Cusack, Ione Skye, John Maloney, etc.
Directed by Cameron Crowe
Lloyd Dobler is an ordinary guy who just graduated high school along with their school valedictorian Diane Court. He has the hots for Diane and tries to court her out. His friends start to tell him that he won't succeed as she's 'too high for his standards', but he still pursues. He invites her on a house party with the rest of the graduates, and he meets her dad, a proud man who wants her daughter to succeed as much as everything even if he keeps a lot of tax frauds from her. While little by little the couples of the opposite world gets more intimate in their relationship, the father is getting anxious that she'll lose her bright future on his boyfriend...but simultaneously the father also has to deal with his troubles from the IRS in his 'business'.
Unexpectedly, I never would've realized that this 80's movie was directed by Cameron Crowe, whom I know was famous for films like Almost Famous, and for a late 80's movie it's quite quite good, storywise and acting, specially a young John Cusack (and also a young Joan Cusack) who's too lively and natural in his role. It's quite amazing to see a teenage underrated movie so good yet it works, specially with the mutual conflicts with the three main characters...and plenty of first cameos of actors and actresses in some of the new movies of late.
