Nice Hotel for family iftaar

verisimilitude
By verisimilitude

I'd like to know which would be a nice hotel to go for a family iftaar with the kids
I guess most iftaar have the same fare... Arabic food, tent, loud music and sheesha
But it would be nice to get some personal experiences... like for instance if any of the hotels have a play area for kids cos I have a four year old
Also, although I've been to a few places I haven't paid for it myself so I dunno how much they cost :-)
The one's I have on my radar are... Sheraton, Marriot, La Cigale, W, Ritz Carton, Diplomatic Tent etc...

decided to try my luck and we went to Villagio and we had a really nice time

We walked in to the Arab restaurant 'Sarai'... its Syrian/Lebanese

they had a set menu, I suppose most Arab restaurants would... the others that come to mind are Al Saha (near crazy signal) and Layali

Sarai charged 238 QAR for a couple and didn't charge for my son

the ambience was nice, the service was nice, the waiter spoke to me in Arabic and I could still understand him perfectly and I replied to him in Arabic and he kept a straight face even :-D

Although my waiter did not speak English he understood English, there were other waiters who spoke english fluently though

The food was nice, I guess the Syrian twist gave it some novelty as opposed to the usual Lebanese fare at other places

But what I really liked about the place is that its close to the praying facility in villagio which was very convenient

also, they let us halt the meal midway and then return for the main course after tharawiya which was till 9

So basically it was not just an iftaar but an iftaar and suhour

and there was enough food for iftaar and suhour, a bit too much actually, a lot of it was wasted

the managers were a bit aloof, to draw a smile from them was like drawing water from a Saharan well although they showered their affections lavishly on other people who were from closer to Levant, but that I have come to expect in all Arab restaurants

But overall we had a nice evening

that reminds me I haven't been to Ponderosa for ages. I used to go there often when the buffet was QAR 30/- eat all you want ;-)

that rating really helps

Sheraton doesn't have anything specifically for iftaar so I guess they don't make the list

But one of the best iftaars I've been to is at Al Sharq... would definitely rate that above Grand Regency and La Cigale

the others I don't know, haven't been too

Also the Ritz Carlton atleast on paper looks very nice

But anyways, what about hotels other than the big 5 star variety?

I had Sohour last night at La Cigale - it was wonderful food and atmosphere. I can only imagine their Iftar would be the same quality and experience.

but still, which others would you recommend?

you want spiritual ambience - avoid the five star hotels

that's still a lot to pay cos I didn't realize the iftaars are just from 6 to 8 at most of these places

And that's not a time when one can eat a lot of food either so you are mostly paying for the ambience

The suhours are a nice option but that would be too late for the kids, I am thinking Ponderosa now :-D

that they have quiet a few cases of people who are brought in because they... overate!!... during Ramadhan

I also think its odd that most people gain weight but anyways, its a topic for a different thread

I am a light eater during Ramadhan in general, not by choice actually, just that I have a sensitive palate. But most iftaar foods that we have confuses me... the last thing we should be having is fried foods and the iftaar servings are usually loaded with them. We should be having lighter foods fruits or stuff that are steamed or baked... any ways...

they charge 180 QAR for iftaar, its a nice big tent and its followed by suhour (for which they charge 250) at 8:30pm so you gotta wind up your iftaar by 8pm
