Tell your company that they are breaking the law and that you want it back now.

Passport holding is like having a mistress. It's not allowed but still it's a common practice. In fact, mine is still with my employer 'til now.

Original passport is really not necessary for

processing your work visa..work visa is a single

entry visa which an employer can obtain it on your

behalf which used to be valid for 60 days.

After u arrive in qatar the process of your id start

with medical finger prints and immigration etc..

For all these process company will take u along with

your original passport.

after you finish the medical and finger prints they

will post your Residence permit in ur passport.

ID is just a card which you need keep with you

anywhere you go outside. If police ask you you have

to show the id.

After ur residence permit is ready you cant leave

this country without an exit permit from your

sponsor so even if you have passport with you it is

not really useful. If you think your passport is not safe in ur home or u afraid of loosing it then its

better your employer have it in their safety lockers.

Simply said: IT IS ILLEGAL to KEEP the passport of an employee! It's a criminal act because it is against the law of the State of Qatar, and the company should be brought to court!

Some companies does especially private ones, but in government offices 'no'. Your passport is useless if you are planning to go out from qatar unless exit permit is being obtained from your sponsor. However, it is better to keep your passport because it is your valid personal document outside your country, so far.

Your passport is the property of the government that issued it and they have entrusted it to you. Your employer has no right to hold it under Qatari law. Also, some employers provide a multiple exit pass, and with such you can leave the country at will with your passport

As for the employer being safer than you are, that's debatable. In the past 10 years there have been instances where entire company employees' passports have been "lost", stolen, or destroyed in fires or accidents from the companys' safety lockers.

I prefer to keep my passport safe myself.
