World Diabetes Day
Since its introduction by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in 1991, World Diabetes day is celebrated every year on November 14th.
Every year the International Diabetes Federation chooses a new theme to be featured in the campaign, in order to address issues facing the international diabetes community. The theme for 2009-2013 is “Diabetes and Prevention”.
Qatar Diabetes Association celebrates the World Diabetes Day in conjunction with the rest of the world, WDD marks the 14th November of each year.
About 16% of the adult Qatari population between the age of 20 and 79 suffers from diabetes, according to a statement issued by Action on Diabetes (AOD).
Here are a few statistics about Qatar’s diabetes epidemic:
About 75 percent of Qataris are overweight and 40 percent are obese or morbidly obese, according to the latest figures from the National Health Strategy 2011-2016.
Some experts predict that 73 percent of Qatari women and 69 percent of Qatari men will be obese by 2015.
About 16.7 percent of Qatari adults are diabetic, according to a study conducted by researchers at Hamad Medical Corporation in conjunction with researchers at other institutions, published in 2009.
More than 50 percent of the population does not engage in any regular physical activity. Qatar has the second highest prevalence of overweight and obese people in the Gulf Cooperation Council region.
According to the International Diabetes Federation, about 20.2 percent of the country’s overall adult population suffers from diabetes; in comparison, only about 8.5 percent of the adult population worldwide is diabetic. Recent studies show Qatar ranks the 4th highest in diabetes in the world and the second highest in the GCC.
