Message from Qatar's Traffic department about overtaking from the right

Citizens earlier expressed their concern over rising cases of overtaking from the right on the country’s roads and Qatar's Traffic department has used this opportunity to remind drivers about the law.

A memo released by the country's traffic department has been making rounds on social media and group chats on Whatsapp. This is what it says:

Thousands of expatriates arrive in Qatar from different countries every year and many are unaware of traffic rules and proper driving methods.

What is required is greater awareness as this is more important than recording violations and imposing penalties. Imposing fines should only be considered a part of the larger learning process rather than for the sake of punishing.

However, I have to admit that an insane amount of fine could instill a fear in drivers that would discourage them from breaking the rules.

QLers, do you think violators should be jailed for 7 days for indisciplined driving?

Personally, passing on the right is about the only way to get around the MANY drivers who just don't understand that the middle and left lanes are actually meant for faster drivers and not for those drivers who either don't know the rules, or don't care about them. Give the fine to those drivers impeding traffic movement.

As usual the punishment is totally out of synch with the misdemeanor (the 0 - 100 law philosophy), and the majority of law-breakers are locals that get away with it (like using mobile phones, not using seat-belts, especially for children, not using indicators, and sitting on their horns when the traffic can't go anywhere, to name some). But beware Expats, different laws apply to you!

it beats sense. some one overtakes u at 150 kph. after disturbing u with multiple flashes. only to find him waiting in the next traffic light . just as the rest of the drivers. if u are traveling from Doha to industrial area or akra u reach at the same time because u wait for each other at the signals. some one teach these people its useless to rush unless its an open road like Saudi road. don't they use there common sense?

How they can know that theres a violation on the above arguments, we all know that NO police seen in the main streets of Doha. I wish more police visible in all traffic light post. How do we call the attention of #moi?I have lots of photos of these violators especially of those vehicles try to get from left line in traffic light signal. This announcement from MOI is for publicity and no action been taken of.

We all appreciate these rules but don't blame it on expats only, majority of Local National abuse traffic rules.

In this case, all roads in Qatar shall be two lane only.

They should penalized these drivers who do excessive flashing of high beams. That's Distracted Driving!

"...Thousands of expatriates arrive in Qatar from different countries every year and many are unaware of traffic rules and proper driving methods." - seriously?? and the locals are all aware of what the traffic rules and proper driving methods are? Does this apply to expats only? Because even with this "NEW" penalty in place, we all know that there are "SOME" who cannot be touched.

More so, buses and Elf trucks should be banned to occupy fast lane especially that they are travelling 80 Kph. It is much more dangerous than overtaking from the right. I travel Salwa highway everyday and they (buses) are pain in the *ss. If I occupy 2nd lane (fast lane) and infront of me is these slow moving big vehicles, I cannot go to 1st lane as these crazy SUV's are there travelling at 500kph tailgating you and flashing their headlights. It would also be dangerous to stay in my lane (2nd) as I could be hit from behind because of slow moving buses ahead of me. I cannot go to 3rd lane as it is illegal to overtake from there. What to do yani? :)

500? piece of cake for those LC owners, jail time I believe LC owners can easily get away with it, confiscation of license, some of those with LC's don't even have a license to get to my point most of traffic violators are those driving huge pickup trucks, exotic cars and LC's! not to mention power bikes that zigzags along the road...
