Liquor permits & muslims

JackDaniels
By JackDaniels

Hey, I've been reading that foreigners can apply for a liquor permit.  I've just read somewhere else that you have to prove that you are not muslim.  Is that true?  Are muslims not allowed to purchase alcohol?  Then what about all the Qataris who drink in the hotel bars that I've been reading about here?

But in relation to the liquor permit and buying beer to drink at home, what about, for example, a Pakistani guy, or an American guy of Pakistani descent with a muslim name.  Will the employer give him the letter with his salary details so he can get a liquor permit?  What about the form you fill in at the liquor store?  Does this ask you whether or not you are a muslim?  Are these kind of guys banned from buying liquor at the liquor store?

Alternatively, what about a white American guy with a non-muslim name, who is a muslim, but doesn't look or sound it, superficially speaking.  Can he get away with it?

Is there a question on the application form about whether or not you are a muslim.  And what happens if you say you are?  No liquor licence?  Or do people answer in the negative?  Bearing in mind that renouncing the religion of Islam warrants a death sentence?

Jack

Many Moslems don't apply for a permit because they don't want to admit openly that they drink

I went there yesterday and it certainly does seem like the rules are changing.

I've been seeing a lot of locals at the QDC lately, so I'm wondering if the rules aren't changing?

I understand that you have to go through an interview with the issuer to chek if you are muslim, if so, still it is up to the issuer to approve your application.

anyway if you are a muslim dont apply unless you are ready to lie.

if you are not muslim; no proplem

and if you are not muslim with a muslim name, better to change your name.

its not good to drink at home anyway, wait until you get back to your country.

good luck Expat

To get a license, you'll need salary certificate stating your salary not lower that QAR 4000, No objection letter from your employer/sponsor and a copy of your residence permit/passport (I think).

But most employers/sponsors won't give the letter for obvious reasons, so those who can't get a license buys from those who have the permit. Unfortunately, re-seller sells the products x200% of the actual price.

For non-Christians, they either buy from re-sellers or provide their staff (their drivers) the requirements and do it for them.

Get the picture??? ;-)

To answer all your hypothetical questions at once. Every expat, no matter what his religion is, is allowed to obtain a liquor permit as long as his company gives him a letter approving and citing his gross salary.
