Women's shoe stores, anyone?

By chocaholic

So I am in dire need of shoes. Not in the I-need-to-fill-my-new-walk-in-shoe-closet way, but in the way of real 'need'. No, don't smirk!
(We're new here, and all our stuff is in boxes waiting to be shipped from back home, and now there are delays :( )

Bottomline - I need to do some shopping to get by on until our things arrive.

Can someone please suggest some shops with regular-style shoes? Please! :)
I walked around the shoe shops I saw at the City Centre, and most of the stuff (even the international brands) was rather 'different'. In that, I think that they have been modified to suit the local market.
To each his (or her) own, but it's not my thing.

Where could I find a decent choice of shoes in regular (international?) styles? Read non-bejewelled/feathered, etc.

Thank you! :)

Will take you up on that one.

And use the remaining 3 sizes to help the poor workers dispose of the horse-poo when I go walking in the Souq. I do really feel sorry for them.

:p

How would Lijjat Papad substitute shoes?! Rather too fragile to be walked on, don't you think? :)

(Or is this a private joke? :))

...Have you SEEN the stuff at Souq Waqif?!

I'd rather stick to going there for the restaurants, thank you :)

And on another note, i find that little police-on-horseback-marching-up-and-down charade just plain ridiculous! Especially after seeing that they actually employ people who walk up and down too, cleaning up the shit after the horses poop in the middle of the street, often bang in front of someone's restaurant table! No, really, that is just too much!

chocaholic, ok, I hear you. and yes, the market here is a bit different than in the West. But you know what, even though you are apprehensive about that now, as you are new, you will actually get used to it. Maybe even grow to like it to a certain degree. I know I have. But it has taken a little time.;)

And you will make friends soon, don't worry. Shoot me a PM if you like :)

...I'm not brand-particular. I shop wherever something suits my style/budget/the occasion, etc. In fact, I prefer little boutiques with their own stuff over big, commercial brands. But that always takes a while to find in a new place.

And I'm more of a needs-based shopper than a compulsive shopper.

That said, no matter where I am, as long as I haven't scoped out new stores, it's always easy to go to the old reliables like Mango, Promod, Ninewest (for shoes), etc. What I noticed here, though, to my dismay, is that their stocks are 'modified' for the local markets. That's what got me a bit apprehensive.

The other reason I'm enquiring about the malls is, as I said to britexpat, that there isn't that much to do outside of them! Considering time is the one thing I have too much of now, I need to find nice places (cafes, restaurants, cinemas) to while my time away.

And of course, friends too, I hope! :)

...don't go where? To any of those? Or any in particular?

From what I've figured out in my short 11 days here, there isn't much to do outside of malls and 5-star hotels, unfortunately. (Apart from the souq and the Pearl and one-off trips to the desert.)

Right?

I wouldn't mind being wrong on this count, though! :)

Chocaholic, depends on what you expect. But since they are the ONLY Malls in Qatar, you don't have another choice ;)

What kind of stuff do you like? What kind of shops did you shop at at home?

All these malls that you guys have variously mentioned - The Mall, Hyatt Plaza, Centrepoint, Landmark - are they worth going to?

I don't mean just for shoes, but for other shopping, cafés, cinemas, etc.

Thank you!

Whyteknight, I do hope you got that list off the internet...or are you a closet shoe fiend? ;)

Good to know that there are stores like Aldo, for when I require them. What I am in urgent need of, however, are regular shoes/sandals in attractive but comfy styles - so yeah, marycatherine, you're right.

All I saw at the City Centre were super-bling'ed shoes in very loud styles and colours . Not really my everyday wear :)

(Not that I have anything against colour. I own hot pink shoes, too :))

There are many Aldo stores here. I was addressing comfortable yet not grannie shoes angle if she is on her feet for more than 5 minutes at a time. That said, I have 4 pairs of Aldo shoes :)

Chocaholic, there is one shop in Landmark Mall, in the old part, next to The One, they may have what you are looking for. Sorry, can't recall the name...but it is a large shop, they have men's ,women's and kid's shoes.

You can also try Marks and Spencer's, also at Landmark Mall.

I will go and look. Point is that I don't even know the other shopping places in Doha - apart from City Centre and Villaggio, that is.

Is Landmark a large mall?

Marycatherine, where are Centrepoint malls?

Thanks!

I like Ecco shoes for comfort and some style (the range is limited here) and yes there are Grandma shoes there but I find them really good for all the hard surfaces we walk on everywhere everyday.

They can be found as a smaller part of Shoemart at City Centre and Centrepoint malls.

They have great casual shoes (flip flops and sandals) that are very comfortable but look good too.
