troost8083 is right,British english is full of manners,gramatically speaks and written,no place for wrong grammer but in american english if you understand other point of view and also describe your point of view with out using of right grammer then all is right rule and its easy to all for use of american english to speak.

In English (British) you say "Please, may I drink a glass of water ?" This is the correct manner to speak in English. Now if you are speaking to an American, anything is possible, you can say "May I have water" as the American English is very liberal.

Do not forget to add “Please” to your question.
"Can I go" means "am I able to go".
"May I go" means "am I allowed to go". Clear!
