So far we were able to find this Afro Chic salon only. Owned and operated by Nigerians, so be prepared to their version of English. My wife couldn't understand a word of what they were saying, so I had to translate, and we had to do it outside, because "men not allowed". Braids did cost around 600 QAR (5 hours of work), but the job was well done.
Mystica: african hair can't be handled by a regular hairdresser. It has to be done by a person who works only with this type of hair.
Jadicia: you have all reasons to freak out, but at least there is this option. In worst case there are salons in Dubai and probably Bahrain.
We were told that there is one more next to the Mushairib towers, but couldn't find it so far.
I am sure many people do it at home as a part-time job, but one has to be a part of an african community to get to know them. However next time I'll see a Qatar Airways employee with nicely done braids, I sure will ask her where she did it.
I'm not in Doha yet, just want to have one less thing to worry about once I get there. I just want to go somewhere via recommendation, so that someone doesn't say they can give me one and then all my hair fall out. Not really sure how many African Americans/Africans there are in Doha and how much experience salons would have with this kind of hair.
As an African-American woman travelling to Doha in about a month. I'm freaking out about my hair, but I wanted to know if the above mentioned place actually panned out. Thanks!
I FOUND IT!! I found the contact card of *Afro Chic Salon* also located at Al Ghafara Shopping complex. I'm not sure if this is perhaps the same salon qdo6 was referring to. Its shop no 188 and their contact numbers are 5618774- 5960741. It says they do braiding, hair extensions, bonding, cornrow, perming. Hope this helps.
The address for the shop is Al Gharafa Shopping Complex Shop Number 215. Look for the Hot Chicken Sign. The number is 655-7616 or 5784823. The barber is Sulimon. The do twists and locs also.
There is a barbershop over near Gharafa Roundabout. You take a right at Immigration Roundabout. It is called African/African American Barbershop. I will post the number. I know they braid and do lady's short cuts but I don't think they do styling. You can check with them to see.
The rest is up to her - quite frankly, the less I have to do with it the better. My job is to notice and be seen to appreciate the final product whatever it is, and however she does it. That I cared enough to ask unprompted will keep me smiling (from the rewards) for weeks! :-)
Braids is not such a big problem. Once I spoke to a kenyan lady who works for Qatar Airways, and she said there are lots of girls who do it (not in a barber's shop, but at home).
Finding out who can do braids is easy, just ask (or better let your wife ask) someone with nicely done braids, who did it for them
The problem is that my wife wants to stop using braids and do hair relaxation, treatment etc. In other words a professional.
..as my wife too will need them, particularly for stuff like braids and weaves etc.
I walked into a barbers the other day and asked for a haircut. After they stopped laughing I realised this was a lost cause, and went out and bought my own clipper and shaving kit. :-(

I'll check it out next I need a trim.
Qd06 Can you post the number, please? My wife is coming in the end of the month and she is very much concerned about where to do her hair...

I'm almost certain that this same question was asked about a year ago, but I've searched for the topic and can't find it!
