Configuring iPhone to use with Qtel's EDGE

After having hassled with XML file and the proxy.pac on my 1st generation iPhone, I have figured out a much easier way to configure proxy server for use with APN. Here it is:
*Download iPhone Configuration Utility from Apple.
*Attach your iPhone thru usb cable.
*Create a Configuration Profile for your device,
* The last Option is the Advanced tab, put in your details: APN = gprs.qtel, username = gprs, password = gprs
* Now here is the kicker, the last line is the field for proxy server and its port. Put those in as: proxy server = 10.23.8.3, port = 8080. (why Apple could not provide this in the UI interface of iPhone itself is beyond me)
* Save your Profile and install it down to your iPhone.
* On your iPhone it will show up on screen and just click on Install.
* On iPhone go to Setting/General/Profile - there it is! ( you can also remove it from here if you want). Also check in Setting/general/Network, the values should be filled out for you with attributes you plugged in as above.
* That's it, fire up Safari and you are online. But folks, I experimented and it works but careful Qtel charges for EDGE/GPRS are exorbitant.

Hi Khuzema! Your methode really works on my first generation IPhone (firmware 3.0). The thing is, Qtel really charge me a lot for this (I'm on Hala). I really want to turn this GPRS off, only I can't remove the profile I've installed. I've tried to remove it both from Iphone Config Utility Setup & from the Iphone itself. None works!

Anybody experience the same?

Cheers!

Thanks, Erasmus. You can be a Hala user and APN= gprs.tel and username & password as gprs works fine for all customers. The 3G speed is quite sporadic and inconsistent over here. 3G changes to Edge and back rather frequently, I notice.

Many thanks to Khuzema for the excellent post. I've tried everything to no avail, but after using Khuzema's method, it works perfectly!

However, as a Hala user, can anyone tell me if using gprs.qtel in the APN field - will I get 3G speeds? (the 3G icon appears on my iphone). Or is it limited to the edge (or whatever) speeds?

I understand that post paid mobinet customers can use web.qtel in the APN field, however, I'm not post paid.

Thanks for any insight!

As per http://www.qtel.com.qa/BlackBerryIS.do , the QR125 plan has only 10MB of data (that MB, not GB). The same has been confirmed by 111 also.

It is strange that they double the speed and lower the price of ADSL time and again, but literally squeeze everyone when it comes to mobile internet usage.

1st of all thanks to the OP. I used the utility and YES..finally it works..

I read on qblog (ithink) that Blackberry service can be configured with an iphone and you pay the 125QR monthly charge and will get unlimited internet over EDGE/3G. Can anyone confirm if this is true? push emails would be nice...

The Qtel data connection (either using gprs.qtel without a monthly plan, or web.qtel with a monthly plan) both work on unofficially unlocked phones too. No "3G" on most turbosim/gevey unlocked phones though, just "Edge" (which is almost bearable speed).

Yes Amnesia but this only works on legally unlocked iPhones.. :(

web.qtel is only if you subscribed for "Mobinet", which has a monthly fee of Qr.20 with 2MB free.

If you are using the one that comes with every phone (QTel calls it "Mobile Internet"), you need to use gprs.qtel, and the proxy information is needed. Even then it allows only web access, email etc still does not work (all ports other than http/https via proxy are blocked while using gprs.qtel).

Mobinet (web.qtel) allows all ports (mail etc) to be accessed, as the access is without any proxy.

Doesn't 3g ring a bell. Qtel operates a 3.5 hsupa network. What is the point of enabling edge? Internet will be such a drag.

There is no point of iphone 3g in qatar. Qtel does not allow 3g connection unless you are on postpaid.

Granted that this edge connection hack is a blessing.

then again the GPS reception for most phones are simply rubbish here in qatar.

You are wasting your time......

*****Still a sucker

Also the following works.

Settings -> General -> Cellular Data Network -> Cellular Data. In the APN field enter web.qtel for EDGE/GPRS. It works like a charm.
