Increase in Rent
By ShehzadAMB •
Dear QLers,
I am currently a tenant in a building appartment at Umm Gawailina. As i recently visited the landloard for the renewal of my tenant agreement for another year and surprised to know that he tends to increase my rent to 42%. There is no direct clause in my contract related to rent increase. Still i am willing to bear upto 10% increase.
My question is:
1. Does it allow to increase the rent to such %? Is there any maximum threshold?
2. How do i address this problem? Leaving home and moving to another is surely an alternate but it costs so much time, energy and money.
Please suggest.

My company pays for my home. And all my friends live in free company accommodation. I think the only expats that Qatar really wants are the ones in company provided housing. Financially it makes no sense to live here paying no tax, but paying 5 times more than you would at home to rent a crappy apartment.
Other friends I know who were considering coming to Qatar looked at the cost of accommodation to stay in something from the 3rd world and realised it was better to stay home.
We earn money for what ?
Nobody else will pay for your home ......

Hardly surprising is it Happy. Very sad news for people in Qatar already struggling to pay excessive rents to live in average accommodation. If I didn't know better I would just assume that policies like these have been designed with the specific intention of getting rid of working class ex-pats.
hmmm...so this news has started taking its toll..

The best option is to look arounf for another accomodation. Prices have increased drastically, accommodation that meet our budget are more like pigeon holes, with the proposed ban on shared accommodation(partitions), companies will soon have to consider revising accommodation allowances to those with families.
The 10% limit was only enforced in 2008, and ended in 2010. Probably because the sheikhs who own all the rental accommodation didn't think it was fair that their rental income could only grow by 10% a year, so the law was never extended.

In 2008, Qatar introduced a rental law that set a 10-percent limit on rent increases for tenants renewing their contracts, a move designed to restrict rapid inflation of rental prices. However, this restriction ended in 2010.
“This means that landlords have the freedom to increase the rent after a contract ends without any caps,” Kettenis said.
Sorry, but unfortunately the 10% cap expired years ago. There is no cap for residential property.

Yes you are right, the law is only 10 % increase. For further information you can contact Rental Dispute Department near Al Muntazah Garden opposite Holiday Villa Main Gate. Hope this information will solve your problem.
Answer 1 - Yes, landlords can increase residential rent by any amount they please. There is no limit.
Answer 2 - You can only request the landlord to reconsider. If not, he can increase your rent, and if you don't pay you will face a problem. It might be time to start looking for a new place to live.
