Lactose Intolerant
So I have recentely (as in yesterday) discovered that I have developed an intolerance to Milk products. In typical fashion the doctor here said for me to avoid milk products, now does that mean I can't eat muffins or anything because they are baked with milk or pasta because it has milk in it??
I'm really confused.
Also if anyone has some good recipes that don't involve milk products of any kind I would appreciate it.

Try not to go overboard with soya. I use rice milk alongside soya (but I don't know if that is available in Doha). I think most dried pasta is made without egg -- just wheat and water. Rice noodles are also good.
I've been checked genesis and it isn't that. We've been narrowing it down over the last little while and it seems to be that.

You’re not H-pylori positive?
Do you suffer from heartburn? You can be tested in gulf Lab or Doha clinic (it’s a simple blood test)
It’s common in doha the last few years.
Search the net for nutritionist advice of alternative non lactose diets. There is a lot of Information about it.

Ya, I saw some lactose free cheese today and it scared me. I don't think I'm that desperate for cheese. :P

Try Megamart, you’ll find wheat-free pasta, bread, and pizza crust. It’s suitable for lactose intolerants.
Off course, fat-free cheeses are always made of soy (you’ll find different brands).
Good to know. I would also die without pasta. My ex used to make his own, but I can't for the life of me remember what he used to put in it.
I'm ok with yeast, it seems to just be milk products right now. We shall see.

if your beer has yeast then that could be a problem. so many peolple especially women are yeast intolerant. but try everything else first. may not necessarily be the beer.
Re milk in pasta, I use wholewheat pasta (brown) which does not have milk. I'm not sure about 'white' pasta but I don't think it has milk but perhaps egg product.
another thing...sorry it's all coming in dribs and drabs...am multitasking at my desk...take acidopholous supplements every day to aid the stomach and digestive system. I usually get mine at Doha Pharmacy in Villagio.

I can do everything but cut out my evening beer. I love my beer when I get home. :(

also eat raw veg with every meal (see my comment to JBH). this aids digestion.
Hmmm, Gypsy, not sure what that could be. Lactose intolerance does not usually start in adulthood. Any problems with allergies or digestion prior to this? If I may ask what did you eat eight hours or so before you felt unwell?
It could be poor liver function which leads to poor digestion and can build up into something painful. Try what I was saying to JBH about the lemon juice and veg juice every morning and then go non-dairy (including egg yolks) and vegetarian for two months. Then you'll give your liver a good old cleanout and your digestion should improve. Drink lots and lots of water and reduce caffeine to a minimum. No booze or ciggies either.
Thanks for that Butterfly! I've been wondering why I suddenly developed it. My mother is saying I should avoid tomatoes too, but the doctor said I should eat more fruits and vegetables. Anyone know what I should do?

After food poisoning or an stomach bug most of us become lactose intolerant for a while. I don´t know why, but there must be a reason.
I remember my daughter had a very bad diharrea and vomiting a few months ago and she developed milk intolerance. I had to give her a special milk with no lactose for a couple of weeks until she started to digest the lactose again.
Why does being lactose intolerant surprize you? I thought you were intolerant to everything?
JBH, maybe you have a problem with your digestion. Try eating meat and legumes (beans/peas/lentils) separately, not at the same meal. You should eat raw vegetables at every meal...at breakfast have a veg juice with your food, if you balk at the thought of veg juice try carrot with fruit and blend together and add some water to dilute for your stomach. For lunch and dinner have a side salad with your meal or do as the French and have some lettuce leaves with a dressing after the main course. Obviously don't put too many food groups into your stomach at once as you'll overload your digestion.
However it sounds like you have a sluggish liver which is overworked. Try liver cleansing foods, the best are lemon, carrots and beets. Have a glass of warm water with some lemon juice first thing in the morning then after 15 mins or so have a glass of carrot, celery and parsley (you'll need a juice extractor) before your breakfast. If you do this every morning I think your digestion will improve. Good for you as you're getting some fruit and veg in as part of your daily target of 5 servings of veg and 2 servings of fruit!

Well JBH, about 3 weeks ago I ate at Lina's cafe and got what I thought was a bit of food poisoning. Ever since then I've had pains everytime I eat, and actually went into the hospital last weekend. Now they are saying that it looks like I've developed and intolerence to milk products.

Gypsy, usually with calcium tablets you have to take two or three per day but recently at Doha Pharmacy in Villagio I found a bottle where it said one per day (1000mg). Typically women under 50 need 1000mg per day. Calcium is excreted from the body daily and if you don't put enough calcium in each day your body extracts it from your bones to put it in your blood. This can lead to osteoporosis (sp?). Make a point of doing weight-bearing exercise three times per week...walking, jogging, playing sports where you have to run around. I advise you to take a daily supplement and also try to eat non-dairy calcium rich foods such as tofu, dried figs, spinach, canned sardines with bones, french beans. As a matter of general well-being you should take a good quality multivitamin with minerals daily. I guarantee you're going to feel better being non-dairy.

I don't have any weight to loose, in fact I have to try really hard to keep the weight I have on. Thanks for the suggestions diamondgirl, do you have any suggestions for what calcium supplements I should pick up?

Experiment with soya milk as you will like some but maybe not others.
I was veggie for 5 years and vegan for 2 and I was fine usinf soya in cereal and in coffee etc.
You will feel better for is also.
As a sure fire way to lose weight, I cut out all dairy from my diet and have to pull my belt in within two weeks.
So if you don't have weight to lose then keep an eye in it.

If you're into smoothies here's a lovely creamy one sans lait...you won't know the difference:
half cup soya milk, banana, handful of strawberries, (you can use frozen but thaw a little), honey to taste, crushed ice. I also add a couple of spoons of ground nuts and seeds for protein in the morning but this is optional. Blend all ingredients. Drink and enjoy!!!
soya milk is available at all bigger supermarkets...Megamart, Carrefour, Giant, Lulu, Family Food...all different kinds...sugar added, vanilla flavour, no sugar added...I find Magamart has the best selection.
Starbucks here doesn't have Soya? Do you know where I can get soya milk here? Is it at Carrefour?

Afraid you'll have to start scrutinising the ingredients on food packaging...milk is in so much more than you can imagine. Eating out you should ask if any milk product is used...cheese, yougurt etc. If you like your cappus/lattes then you can use soya milk. Le Pain Quotidien at Villagio will make soya cappucino and it's quite good if not so frothy. I've launched a mini campaign at Qatar's Starbucks to have soya milk available for making the coffees. If enough people ask then they may do it. I just got back from Italy where they thought I was an alien being asking for soaya milk in my coffees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm a vegan so I use vegan cookbooks. Even if you want to eat meat then you can get plenty of ideas for other dishes to accompany the meat in these cookbooks. Online you'll find loads of recipes by googling 'vegan cookery' or similar. I make muffins, bread, in fact all kinds of food without milk products. A little bit of research and practice and you'll be fine. Cutting out dairy will probably make you feel more energised, less prone to sinus ailments and general allergies. It's a healthy way to be. just remember to get your calcium in...supplements, sesame seeds, etc.
