Slapping on the face of small kids

By anitrodrig

A friend of mine told me that there is a small kids nursery(age 3 to 5yrs) in Al Saad area where the Indian lady teacher slaps the face of small children. I think some parents do not know about this or some just ignores it. Does anyone has such experiences and can anyone suggest how to deal with this?

When I was at school, it was common to be caned or slippered :o)

There were such cases Prism, though largely unreported. A few did make headlines occasionally. Thankfully it's all history now! I must say I was a very very mischievous child and a mega bully, and when teachers used to beat me that used to make me even more aggressive, where else if a teacher was to talk to me kindly I'd be more submissive namely due to my feeling affection and sympathy towards her. Which makes me condemn beating children in schools even more...it's hardly if never a deterrent and will only teach kids to be violent in order to get their way!

FatimaH, never heard so far kids being maimed or killed by teachers, that is too bad for someone to do being in such a noble profession...I remember ears being pulled and pinched by some of my teachers though somehow I was never subjected to it.

A school in Sri Lanka, Bella. Back then stuff like child rights and anti child abusing laws were unheard of from where I come. And whilst my school had it's share of brutal teachers(mind you we went to one of the best girls' schools in the city)none were even half as bad as some boys schools and schools in rural areas. Now though things in Sri Lanka are much better specially after many successful awareness campaigns and laws came into being.

Wow!....when I was at school, if a teacher even lifted a finger to a child he/she would lose their job. No questions asked!

Where did you go to school FathimaH?

I had pretty much the same kinda school life as you did and only learned all this in like the last ten years. When I was a kid, beating up kids by teachers were quite the norm, and there were cases of kids been maimed and even killed at the hands of abusive teachers, Audubillah! Glad to know times are changing...well at least for the most part except for cases like mentioned in the OP!

Fatimah...thanks for taking time to respond. All such action from teachers weren't an issue when I was a kid so guess I am completely out of sync on the latest dos and don'ts for the teachers...:)

The nursery is not a registered one and is run by an old lady in her villa. They converted one room to a small classroom to accomodate kids. When all the other unregistered nurseries were caught by the authorities she managed to escape un-noticed. I do not want to disclose the name of the nursery but will surely make advise anyone who plans to send their kids there.

Just read the first line "A friend of mine told me....". This country is built on rumors and hearsay. It is the only reason to get out of bed in the mornings, get in my landcruiser and head to Landmark's Starbucks for a coffee and to catch up on all the juicy goss with my mates.

Well schools like my daughter goes to has these methods of disciplining:

1)telling the mischievous child to stand in the corner.

2)not allowing them certain tasks they take pleasure in doing like erasing the board.

3)Getting them to write stuff like "I'm sorry" "I will not do this again" etc a few dozen times.

4)Not allowing them to go play during break.

5)Detention

These are just a few and I must say they pretty much do the job as far as most if not all the kids go(I know this judging from what both my daughter has told me and from what I hear from other parents and teachers. Specially 3 and 4. But y'know more than any of these "punishments" I notice smaller kids tend to respond far better when spoken to with kindness and positive words than all the harsh talk and insults.

What could be those several other ways than slapping??? While responding take into account the time the teacher has, the task at hand, the number of children to be taken care of and the exaggeration quotient of such incidences.

P.S.: By no means should it be construed as my agreement to slapping of a child. I am just curious and love specifics rather than generalisations.

People have different styles of parenting, so if you think that how your parents raised you when you were a child is good and wants to use the same style to your children, go ahead... but you cannot do that style on other parent's children.

Personally, i hate seeing adult slapping a child on the face (whether you're a parent or not!).

several ways to teach and punish a child but noways by slapping.

GSJ, keep away from the Indian style of education. Time has changed, we know the sentiments of children and such methods need to removed, if this still exist.

Please learn and understand the child pyschology; the bad behaviour towards a child impacts on the future mental and personality development.

No one has the right to hit someone else's child! I would be raging if someone did that to my children, when I have them.

There is a difference between punishing n slapping.

Only a person who has a habit of slapping his or her own children will support such a behaviour, which is truly sad.

How would anyone feel if they were slapped in public. Are they going to go the Gandhian way and offer the other cheek, that will be something?

Slapping is humiliation, and whatever Fatima said is right. Accusing her of spreading fitnah is real low.

GSJ, there are so many things you need to learn about raising kids in Islam. It is haram to slap a kids face in Islam. A teacher has no right to beat up the kids in Islam especially those who are under 10. That also they will need explicit permission from their parents to punish their kids and only those who are above 10.

Let alone kids, you are not allowed to slap anyone big or small.

Punishing is fine, brother, but not in a manner that contradicts the Quran and Sunnah(I am assuming you are a Muslim,if not correct me)Are you suggesting the teachers of India(and even Sri Lanka for that matter) know better about disciplining kids than Allah and His messenger? There are plenty of ways to punish kids, in accordance to our religion, that is far more effective than slapping their faces!

By smoke• 11 Mar 2012 13:35

Thats its? I remember when we were kids we'd get canes on the hands/slaps on the face/belts on the backs/sticks and wire hangers both from parents and teachers...of course we deserved it when we were naughty..and those were the ways of the day.

This day and age even kids have "rights" oh well lets see how they turn out.

There is a big difference between a smack on the bottom to discipline a child and beating them or slapping them in the face Green Signal Jumper. Slapping is abuse.

Punishing is absolutely necessary for Kids in wrong doing.

Otherwise they will become fearless and commit further crimes. Different people as part of their culture adopt different practises.

It is absolutely normal in india to get slapped.

A teacher never beats her children for fun or due to a change in Hormone. But for the betterment of her Children. (She considers her students her own children). In the way the speaker views a father, mother, teacher should be hanged for beating children.

Then in this world there will only be children,AnitRodrig & Fathimah

Oh really? Now I am a fitna maker for speaking the truth? Shame on you! Are you not aware of the hadiths and scholarly verdicts severely condemning beating kids, specially striking their faces?Did the Prophet, Peace be upon him, ever slap a child? There are so many hadiths where he commands people to treat kids with kindness and respect. And whilst admonishing kids is obligatory slapping on their faces is sinful and evil! For your kind information I happen to speak with knowledge and not ignorance. And if that makes me "grandma" like, so be it. And may Allah guide you!

It is never acceptable this kind of behavior Dear green! Maybe if it is your child i can say it's ok!! but your are not the father or the mother who feed them. It is ok to punish a child or a student but not in this way.

I guess this teacher need to be punish and send her back to her country so she'll learn something in her life!

In what religion or what part of quraan or bible God has told u to slap ur kid.

I don't think God would love the kids to be slapped. in addition, hitting kids is affecting him/her psychologically and make them lose their self confidence and can suffer from depression.

is that what u want for ur kid??? fine, but u slap ur own kid. don't let a stranger slap ur kid for u.

Guys this is a chaos by some one mischevious.

We Indians have been able to contribute only because we have got slapped in home & school.

We are here in GCC as the greatest demand work force in all areas in terms of skills, tolerance, business, management and above all compatability, because we have been slapped. This has given us the name of biggest and trustable employees among all the nationalities & are at par of all as per the GCC nationals say so. I'm proud we are Indians.

Don't get dragged away by stupid man made rules when the creator has asked us to teach behaviour whatever way it applies.

Kids are very soft and I like them more than you people who look really less matured to pass such comments.

We create ourselves above the mighty knowledge of the creators who has many trillions years experience and we not even mature in the age of 40 - 50 years that we survive as adults.

Pass comments only when you fell like being knowing more on the subject.
