Teaching English while looking for...
Hello Everyone,
I was hoping I could get some solid advice here. I am a Canadian and I have began researching the possibility of teaching English in Qatar. I did this for two years in Japan. Any advice on teaching English in Qatar would would be great.
However, the real reason why I am posting is that I have just graduated with a MSc in geoscience, I am a fresh petroleum geologist. The reason I would teach english in Qatar is so that I could look for work as a geologist, in the mean time, without exhausting my funds. However, I am not quite sure if such professional positions are available to other nationalities, such as Canadians as myself.
Is there potential to network with individuals in Qatar with a possiblity (even if small) to be a potential candidate for a position. Or are such professions kept strictly for Qatari citizens?
Are there Any expats here who could shed some light?
Thank you
I would like to take part in a english course or club to improve my english. If you can start such a club with fair price,I would immediately make my decision.
Sorry ... Qu, It's him who asked for one WEEK .................. ...............................

MM, u must wait, don't put that much pressure on the fellow. lol.
Your knowledge of the scientific and technical jargon in your field of Geoscience has not been questioned. With an Msc degree in the above field, surely you must be a very knowledgeable person in that subject. That is just what you have tried to show off in your latest posting. Your knowledge of English which you desire to teach is in question. Your view that you could improve your English grammar in "less than a week," simply reflects your shallow knowledge of the English language. It takes years to learn any language.
I am still learning!
Shibby , See you on coming Thursday then ............ ...........
Wild ............... ROFL .........on discovring a new word ...... "dis encouraged" ...
gmrg seems to be from a stand-up comedy artists group !
Wow, Thanks for the reminder of the arrogance that many 'English Teachers" carry. Brings me back to my days in Japan. I worn you though... read on with care... there will likely be more grammatical errors in this post.
I guess where my value resides, is in my extensive scientific vocabulary which I have developed over the past 6 years while earning an MSc. Grammar is not the only part of the English language. I am assuming that when a country such as Qatar, whose primary industry and GDP is based on petroleum, there may just be a niche market for English speakers who can train geologists and engineers there scientific lingo.
I am sure most of you grammar natzi's could tell me what a neutron or what an electron is. Perhaps you may even be able to teach a student about stable isotopes and compton scattering, confidentially too of course. Of course you will know about down hole logging tools and there purposes in delineating permeability and porosity, oil saturation, lithology and stratigraphic boundaries. I am sure you know all about depositional facies of siliciclastics and carbonate and how to tell the difference between a matrix supported, polymict conglomerate and a ooilitic grainstone. I am sure you know all about epithermal neutrons and thermal neutrons. Clearly you will know about seismic velocity and its relation to mineral density, Poissons ratio and youngs modulus. I could go all day.
It would take me less than a week to read a few books to improve and update my grammar. For you to build up to my level of fluency in both concepts and vocabulary in sciences, specialized towards engineering and geoscience, it would take you 6 years. Get off your high horses.
Congratulations, you can teach grammar to a high school level. I can teach a vocabulary and how to speak at a professional level. Writing is my weak point which can easily be improved.
Thanks for your kind words gmrg.
"dis encouraged" is another beautiful home-made creation. It's either 'encouraged' or 'discouraged', but not both.
"I have began researching.." Poor Japanese who were taught by you (the OP).
gmrg: Uff, such English from a native speaker with so many glaring errors in his posting! Sure, he will find a teaching job here due to his nationality, but what would his teaching be like when he himself has poor knowledge of the language?
Uff, such haters -_-
Just by being a native english speaker you can EASILY get a job in any school or worst case scenario (which stilll pays very good) you can give tutoring classes from home. Dont be dis encouraged and if thats what you wanna do...GO AHEAD.
Either field you are bound to find something here and either field will make a good living
My question is: If a person desiring to teach English is unable to write several lines without grammatical mistakes, what sort of knowledge would he be imparting to his students? The first paragraph has two spaces between the words "on" and "teaching" which can be overlooked as a typing error. The same sentence has the word "would" written twice with one following the other. Next, I would have preferred to write "have just graduated with Msc in Geoscience" dropping the "a" and capitalizing the name of the subject. The "a" before Msc is incorrect. In the following line the word "English" should have been capitalized. The next sentence which reads "such as Canadians as myself" should have read "such as Canadians as me." Lastly, the word "possibility" has been misspelled and the word "any" should not have had a capital "A".
PS: I am not a native English speaker.
Better stick to your basic education & be on the look out for a fresher or lower post anywhere on the globe , leave English & Qatar for those who are more suitable ............ ..............
I suggest if stick with teach as it pays well in Qatar.
You require a minimum exp of 5-7 years in working in geology here in the middle east.
I suggest stick with teaching and switch school one which pays well and allows you to teach the area you have mastered in.
Check out DES (Dukhan Engish school)
Thanks
