Qatar University’s sixth year medical student publishes study on perinatal cardiomyopathy
The College of Medicine at Qatar University had published a study on perinatal cardiomyopathy (PPCM) which was prepared by Muhammad Badi Ahmed, a sixth-year medical student.
The importance of this study is highlighted given the limited number of published data available regarding the clinical presentation of PPCM in the perinatal period.
Moreover, this study aims to examine the clinical presentation, management, and outcome of patients with PPCM using data collected from 47 hospitals in 7 countries in the Middle East.
The study included 64 hospitalized patients with severe heart failure (HF) with a diagnosis of PPCM. Most of the patients were Arabs (96.9%), with a mean age of 32.5 ± 5.8 years.

A family history of cardiomyopathy or HF was present in 11 patients (17.2%), and 12 patients (18.8%) had a previous history of HF. Hypertension was present in seven patients (10.9%) and diabetes in three patients (4.7%).
Future HF records should include variants of pregnancy and fetal outcome when PPCM is the etiology of HF, which will enable a detailed study of this uncommon condition. A high index of suspicion for PPCM is required to make the diagnosis because the associated symptoms and signs may be indistinguishable from those related to a normal pregnancy.
This paper is a great addition to this area as it will help guide the approach to managing PPCM patients, due to the lack of published data on this topic, especially from the Middle East.
According to Mohamed Badi Ahmed, “Different countries and this added a lot to my experience. That being said, being the only student in this amazing research group was a challenge, as I was not only representing myself but all students of the College of Medicine at Qatar University.
“With confidence, I can say that the impression taken on the students is wonderful because we have proven that medical students at Qatar University have the ability on creating and publishing research in reputable journals with a great influence factor. I think this publication is the spark that will lead to the flames of achievements."
