Canon G10 or SLR?
By FranElizabeth •
MOrning:) I know we have had similar questions before, but I'm confused! I want to buy an SLR (Canon) preferably. When I asked my photographer sister, though, she said to go for a Canon G10.. which is NOT an SLR but does the same things. I don't want to buy the G10 only to want to get an SLR next year when I 'grow out' of the G10.
Does anyone have any experience of Canon G10? with or without comparison to an SLR?
I'd appreciate your thoughts.. thanks:)
I use both G10 & SLR for photo. Normally I use wide angle or short distance object with G10 if I do not have time to change the wide angle lens to capture the object because I put zoom lens (70-200) in my SLR.
You can use G10 in manual mode similar with SLR. There is an optional teleconverter for G10, but I am not recommending you to use teleconverter as the result was not good.
Just consider the purpose of the camera. if you like simple and like taking landscape or short distance object - G10 is good option. But if you plan to buy additional lens, buy SLR.
I have both, the DSLR is my pro shooting camera , the G10 is my wife's and is my back up and is also great quality for whenever you don't want to carry around a 3kg camera and lens.
the G10 has few prosumer qualities like the full manual controls, and the hot shoe which allows mounting a remote flash trigger. it's also decently built and feels good in the hand.

Have fun in photography! =)
The G10 does NOT do the same thing as an SLR.
For one, you are stuck with only one lens, whereas with an SLR you can change lens to suit your shot.
With an SLR you are investing in a KIT, not just a camera. Lenses and bodies can be upbraded as time goes by. With the G10 you must replace the whole camera when your skill has reached the next level.
Ask yourself, where do you see your photography this time next year. If you are still going to be happy taking snap, then go for the G10 ... it's a good camera.
