Is bribery common in driving schools?

My wife had recently joined a popular driving school in Abu Hamour area. She had chosen the course with a lady instructor. Since the day one, my wife was almost frustrated, by the instructor's attitude and the way she trained her every day. (To understand the level of threatening, the instructor took her to the busiest intersection on her first day, needless to say my wife is driving a car first time)

Since the attitude was continuing everyday which made my wife more depressive, I took the decision to lodge a complain at school management. While approaching their office, I have been advised by one of my colleagues that the management "knows" everything and the issue can be handled only by "bribing" the instructor. One of his valid point make me to take "decision" that if the complaint is registered, even the alternate instructor behave in a similar way or even worse (as all the instructors "work" as a team)

My problem is solved with few hundred riyals bribe to the instructor. All the instructor's attitude issues were fixed overnight. At-least my wife is happy for the rest of the classes.

My question goes at the subject of this thread.

Are things different now? When I took my driving test, I had to take a few lessons as well as left hand drive. The instructor was quite professional and he didn't hint for a bribe. I wouldn't have paid anyway.

Thought that Qatar was serious about eradicating corruption. Guess implementaton / policing is the issue.

According to the indictment, Fadeyi and the two others are accused of concocting a scheme to sign off on tests that weren't passed or weren't even taken.

Coercing for bribe is not only limited at the driving instructors. Even other staffs such as theory class tutors intimidating the students for so called "Party" in public, even during introduction class itself. Every student has his/her own sad stories, which is adequate to film a documentary. ;-(

I understand the route of this problem is very deeper & it can't be eradicated easily. The most disquieting issue here is that the management "knows" and supporting indirectly. So, for me, lodging a complaint at school management is a kind of suicide at this stage.

I strongly abhorrence this injustice, inhuman act of bribery and giving mental stress to the newbies. But, I am waiting for my wife to crack the test without further mind stress and then I can pursue for any legal action with local police, so the newcomers might get some relief at-least.

The fact is there a few pointers which your instructor will give you, which you have to remember when taking the test, like look out of your left window, can u see the edge of the back bumper, then turn the wheel twice etc etc...these are surefire tips to get thru tests like L-test and pocket parking..

and if the driving instructor does not tell you these, your chances of passing is considerably reduced..

When I went to one of the driving schools here 5 years back, the instructor was a Srilankan, and he hinted on the second day that he wanted to call his family, and does not have money for a telephone card.. i gave him 50 Riyals..and then he taught me some of these tips..

the day before the test, he told me he knows the cop, and for 500 riyals he can fix the test, even if i fail..thanx, but no thanx, i told him, went ahead and passed in flying colors..

The driving instructors themselves dont know much... about the traffic rules and driving...

People usually are afraid that the instructors will fail them so they pay the bribe. There is no relation between the instructors and the driving test officers. The instructors are not even allowed to come near the test arena.

Another easy way is to enroll for automatic car driving instead of manual Car. Learning an Automatic Car is 4 times easier than a manual one. It is also much safer for a beginner. Then the driver only has to concentrate on the steering wheel and the traffic.

I think its possible to learn to drive an automatic car reasonably well within 4 to 8 hrs (driving time) for a newbie.

People are advised in fact before it gets ugly to first off give the instructor a "gift" of cash. I found it both appalling and funny how this lady instructor had hinted to a friend of mine something to the effect of "my birthday is coming, what will you give me as a present?" Gross!

I think it is more proper to call it extortion. It doesn't even deserve to be called bribery because the poor victim doesn't volunteer to give money but rather he/she is being forced to give. There is no justification whatsoever for this kind of illegal practice.

I would report any solicitation of a bribe to the police. But that's just me.

Driving teachers are skilled people from various countries. I would respect them as teachers.

Did anyone care to check if they are getting deserving salary? So management think they will pay a small salary and let them make enough by squeezing from students.

If they are given enough salary and still they are doing the same, then you can blame them. My teacher was a nice gentle man and he didn't ask for anything. He was the best teacher ever.

Kindly try to see from both sides.

There was an article in the newspaper the other day that highlighted the "bribe system", having to give money and presents to the instructors to receive half way adequate service at the driving schools here.

It seems to be common and necessary to do if one wants to learn how to drive and pass the test.

I am not surprised, considering this, at the standard of the drivers here.

so, taken in to consideration what Riddhi has said, but by doing so, you have been giving a big encouragement to your trainer to not only take money from you, but also from others.

There is a formal way to solve this issue...you don't even need to go to police station, just lodge a complaint on the web page of the MOI Qatar, and the rest wuold have been taken care of!

sorry my friend, but its your weakness that became your trainers strength...

P.S. -> one side your talking against it, other side your encouraging it...are you confused?

I had the same problem with me when I went for licence. im not taking their side, but yes its expected by them that they are doing us a great favor and we have money to buy car so we should give him/her some tip to make her happy and they will teach us well.

secondly some of them prefer a gift after you pass, so more or less you have to give. but I gave my instructor 50riyals tip per week.
