Well done Kutch! Btw, really nice video Alija! That must have been a great experience. I would also love to have a chance to swim with a whale shark. But not the shark that attacks :P
Have you ever seen whale dung in your life? Take a close look at the bottom of your Toilet bowl it is the same shit! Except whale sharks feces is crustaceous and human is cornish...

For your information this fish is available in the north field of Qatar and it can be seen in hundreds during june and july. It comes to Qatar for mating.
Great that whale sharks are in Qatar. I would just love to see a dugong - that's something I've never seen before. However I did see a whale shark diving last summer in Musandam. I've got videos here:
And as for previous questions about whale sharks being dangerous you've got a better chance of being nibbled to death by a goldfish than being harmed by a whale shark. Great whites or makos on the other hand... well if u see a whale shark while swimming like in the videos above, consider yourself one lucky individual. If u see a great white like the ones in the video below... well then, get out of the water ASAP...
but fortunately that was taken in Cape Town though....
{FranElizabeth} Yes there is some dugongs reported here in Qatar. Actually I also saw in Al Mafjar somewhere near Al Ghariya it's really sad these creatures where always found dead by shallow waters. Last week as well spotted carcass of turtle somewhere between Umm Said and Wakrah where you can find the Car Graveyard...
{cybernator} It is remora fish they are like janitor fish and always stick on the host (host: mostly sharks or turtle)..
Today we spotted HUGE sting ray I never seen that big yet but this is extremely almost like Mantas.. I will post pictures later, just a bit tired for the trip today :D And many Barracuda (school), and locals (Qatari) catch King Fish around 7 Feet long they use spear gun, but FREE Dive only :)
Dugong - or mannates are a very different species. Dugong are mammals whereas whale sharks are cartilagenous fish.... Completely unrelated. Btw, dugongs never school so seeing "many" is quite unprecedented?!? and they are a rare sight in Qatari water, though they have been spotted. 2nd largest worldwide dugong population (after Australia's coral sea) lives in the Persian gulf - around 7,000. They are concentrated in the southernmost coast of qatar and extending toward Abu-Dhabi.
It's a very rare sight to spot a whale shark. However, my brother who works in one of the far offshore platforms told me that they regularly see whale sharks as well as tiger sharks by around March until June (some migratory pattern probably?!?).
I have only seen one whale shark out of around 400+ dives in Qatar whereas we have seen many other shark species other than whale sharks (Bull sharks and blacktips most common and very rarely tiger sharks).
@ qtrliving; by the way, Im very good friend with the guy from Wakra you are talking about.
I have seen whale sharks a few times while working on, or flying to, drilling platforms in Qatar North Field so I have no problem to believe the pics are genuine from Qatar, it is a long way out though :)
This shot is clearly taken in an aquarium...see the 2nd pic with lottsa other fishes...that one is japanese koi fish which is an famous ornamental fish...
the creatures dont have teeth and only eat plancton. What they do is come near the surface, open their mouths and swim around filtering out the plancton.... just avoid swimming to close to them when they are feeding or u might just get swallowed up whole!!!
There are 3 main sharks that attack people, Great white, Tiger shark and the bull shark. Fortunately despite its huge size, the whale shark is not one of them, and actually is a filter feeder.
...Kutch Photo is real, this whale sharky mostly play on North Field Bravo around WHP's (Well Head Flatform). The size of this one above approximately 3.5 to 4 meters. At night you get an extra bonus seing oversized fish around the rigs.
I've also posted a video of myself (august 2009) swimming with a whale shark.

Why are they dying?

ooo, there was a dead dugong down along Dukhan beach about a month ago. Maaan, that thing was Uuuuggly.
The whale shark looks beautiful although, Toxic8, I have no intention of being mistaken for plancton or anything else..;-)
{cybernator} It is remora fish they are like janitor fish and always stick on the host (host: mostly sharks or turtle)..

In our country we call them "dugong" or "sea cows" basically harmless, I saw a bunch of them 100kms from doha harbor.

So how can he rest of us get to enjoy this experience? Do we have to charter a boat or do we have to know someone with a boat to take us that far?

Wiked,
There are 3 main sharks that attack people, Great white, Tiger shark and the bull shark. Fortunately despite its huge size, the whale shark is not one of them, and actually is a filter feeder.
