Coming to Doha

By PaulN

We are thinking of relocating to Doha from London. Me and my wife will be coming with our 1 year old as I have been offered a job in construction.

Any advice would be appreciated . what's it really like for expat families?

Any tips on best locations for compound living , likely cost etc. Compounds near nurseries ? is there a waiting list for nurseries?

We don't really want to bring the contents of our house with us. assuming we can get a cot and highchair in Doha.

All advice greatly appreciated.

Hello all

Following on from previous advice that I should aim for a compound near my work, can anyone recommend any compounds near or not too far from Old Alsalata district? Thanks

Thanks for the advice and the good wishes, much appreciated. Getting accommodation near work to cut down on journey times makes sense.

Jim Mc I agree, I wasn't saying I wanted a Brit only compound! Good advice on the nursery shortlist, we have a little while yet to decide on nurseries and yes the choice does seem huge.

Hi Paul, I just red your post again and I don't see you say that you were looking for a Brit only compound so someone is confused here I think. Anyway, as stated, you should look for somewhere close to your work as driving in rush hours here can make for long journeys. For your budget you should have plenty of choice with good facilities. I don't know of any compounds that have nurseries included, they may exist but driving around there seem to be nurseries all over the place - probably get good advice if you get to a short list from other QL posters. I have been here almost one year, not found anything I can't get back home except rain. Good luck, the experience will be whatever you want to make it!

all compounds are meant for everyone, regardless of where you come from. must there be a special compound only for the British? since you are fresh bird in the middle east, i suggest be humble, dont sound arrogant, thinking you are a higher class than others that you must mention 'brit', lower your expectations, raise your tolerance towards rudeness, and get ready for all that are going to raise yoru blood pressure.

Which compounds would you recommend for a newly arrived brit family with a one year old son, don't really need more than 3 bedrooms (although understand 4 or 5 beds are common). Looking for somewhere friendly, around 12-15k QAR a month, fully furnished with good communal facilities and maybe even a nursery onsite.

Also are any particular nurseries recommended?

You can get everything here.

Summer is extrremely hot, but life for expat families is good and easy going.

School places are at a premium, whilst there are many nurseries around.

Good luck..
