Can someone recommend a shipping company to ship furniture from Canada to Qatar and what would be the problems with that. i.e. customs, etc.

Thanks

mine left i believe southampton on 21 and arrived in doha on 15th. However, it took 1 month from the time it had been picked, paid for etc to the time it actually left.

Do not believe your shipping company

The shipping company told me it takes 30 days on water and then it about 20-30 days to clear customs. I heard 4%is the correct amount for customs

We will see how it goes :-)

I'll be there as well. We can compare notes.

4% customs i think and too months might be conservative too, i'd think in reality id be closer to 3 months, however lets see what others say.

I know about the 2 months delay. I am starting in about a month and a half so we will ship before hand from here. We are staying in Doha

I don't know about the furniture. I understand that there is quite a good 2nd hand market here as well. Certainly its not worthwhile to bring electronic items (I've heard way too many stories about problems even with converters).

$4000 doesn't sound bad at all for shipping but I don't know about customs fees and that sort of thing. I know in shipping things back from Germany when I was there, there was always pilferage from the cargos.

Where are you going to be working?

oh and also a very important issue will u have some time to adjust by staying in a hotel.

The problem will be how long it will take for it to come to Doha.

Mine has taken 1 month just to go to a ship and I was told about 10 days to clear it.

Therefore, from the time you send it to the time you receive it it might be more than 2 motnhs ... can you handle having it for that long?

I am looking for a compound villa and will look for semi furnished which I think comes with no furniture and just few appliances if I am not mistaken

Any news about Plasma prices. e463 mentioned that he will make some calls and post the prices for Panasonic and Sony 42" and up

Thanks

remember you may have to ship it again if you are 'attached' to the furniture

Are you provided with accomodation .. if so is it furnished or not?

Also, even if you are not, a certain degree of rentals are provided with quality ranging generally from poor to good.

I just got quotations from shipping companies. From Toronto to Doha, it would be around $4,000 CDN for 20' Container but I will include all our house furniture such as 3 bedrooms, living, family and dining. Which I think would cost far more than 4000 CDN to buy such furnitre in Doha or am I mistaken

I think that the quality is about the same. Shipping charges are extremely high so other than GandMa's rocker its probably not worthwhile.

People said that furniture there isnt that great compared to here. Our furniture is very good and we are thinking of moving all the furniture, it would be less than a container but it might be worth it than selling and buying there

How much stuff are you moving? I've a few things but I think I'll likely buy most of what I need there. I'm also coming from Canada.
