I'm happy all went well with you and your family in Egypt.

If you travel anytime of the year that is not a major Holiday for Egyptians, you will enjoy it even more, and will surely be less busy. Sites are always awesome and charming though.

I just got back from Cairo too…: ))

Yup it is hectic on the streets so it is always nice to have a local friend to buffer.

As Egyptians we do not have complete insight into how bloody annoying it is to be harrassed so much everywhere u go. Thats why its nice to travel out of Cairo a little. Egypt is not Cairo and so on...

Hope u have a real good time.

last xmas break went to egypt with my wife and two teenage daughters. we found it very dirty - lots of garbage - and very dirty - lots of men asked if I needed help servicing my women. the men are pigs. if i were a woman, i wouldn't go there except as part of a group. we even had armed security guards ask for either money or help with sexual favors. the sights were lovely, the men were not.

Good decision nqatar.

For those who say that this sort of harassment happens everywhere, I have to disagree. I've never been anywhere that even comes close to the level of harassment I got in Egypt.

nqatar - if they don't leave you alone after you say 'NO' once I find the best solution is to spot the nearest member of the 'tourist police' and tell them you're going to go and talk to him. They soon disappear then.

I have this beautiful travalogue on Egypt, written in my mothertounge, by a female author. She had visited Egypt some 2 years back, stayed there for almost 2 months, and that too all alone, without husband. She travelled throughout the country using only the available local transport, sometimes even in a fully loaded bus too.

The people trying to sell you rubbish things are not isolated to Egypt, it happens in almost every tourist place (with some exceptions, better to mention it if you are putting it on QL...LOL).

but it's ultimately worth putting up with as it is an amazing country, as you said TG.

So, Nqatar, just go for it. Be cautious as you will always be in any foriegn country.

Safety is relative - ask yourself this, are you scared to walk around in the streets here alone? If not then I don't see why u should be scared to walk in the streets there...Harassment occurs here too btw (I;ve been subjected to it here, and that's not becuase I dress disrespectfully to the culture - i've had catwhistles and many comments made....)

So yeah it just depends - if you're confident about urself there should be no problems.

And these harrassment stories are coming from guys! As a woman, you will receive that and SO much more. Not dangerous, but it can be very off-putting, very annoying.

Like tallg said, you have to say NO constantly, but I don't have it in me to ever tell anyone not to go to Egypt. IMO, any one who has a chance should go.

Just get your backbone in good shape before you go.

You should be fine, but as others already said you should be prepared for a lot of harassment.

At the tourist sites or even just walking around the city you will be constantly bombarded with people trying to sell you tacky rubbish or people trying to tempt into their friends shop. The taxi drivers will also try and take you to a friends shop or factory.

It gets very tiring constantly saying no, but it's ultimately worth putting up with as it is an amazing country.

Yeh it is for real... not to mention the others who try and sell you gold and tell you it's the best and then the paintings on original papyrus paper etc... I'm not saying you don't get approached by such kinda people in other places of the world trying to sell you something or the other, it's just what I went through in Cairo...

btw. I agree with colt comment. seems realistic

enjoy it ,anyway there is no place called perfect place, to be careful it is a must anywhere in the world.

Italy is great place, Umm but i think they also have Mafia ( if u know what i mean)

The things i faced while in Cairo:

- When I took a picture in front of some camel that was out there, this dude walks up to me and is like, "Give for me 10 dollars, that camel in your bicture is mine". - I mean wtf ever!!!

- Many of them came up to me outside my hotel and were like, "Man, you look like strong, but you must have somezing for your make love time. Try this Egyptian viagra, make you love like a horse... long time... only 100 dollars" - lol!!!

On the other hand when I was in Luxor and Alexandria, it was awesome... didn't experience nothing like the above in those places...

Touristic areas like Sharm and Aswan are safe. Moving alone in Cairo (some parts of it) is Risky. Better be within a group

it would be better if you go with your husband even though i don't see any danger except from the noisy Egyptians blowing horns (its really noise, irritating), beggars following you til you give them a penny. if it is your first time in Egypt and your not with your husband, i suggest you don't go. ;o)

cheers,

paul
