IVF Center is an acronym for in vitro fertilization ('in vitro' meaning 'in glass'). Simply put IVF is adding a man's sperm to his female partner’s eggs in the laboratory to produce embryos. In vitro fertilization is an option for many couples who cannot conceive through conventional therapies. These embryos are put back into the female partner's uterus (womb) after 3 to 5 days of being in the incubator, hopefully they will then grow into a baby. The reasons IVF is done include - poor sperm quality and/or quantity, obstructions between the egg and sperm, ovulation problems, and sperm-egg interaction problems.

Hi, do you still need information on IVF in Hamad Hospital? I tried sending some info to that address you gave, but my mail agent fails to recognize it.

Yes, I agree.

From what I understand, when you give birth in a hospital they come around very quickly to ask for a copy of your marriage certificate. I'm sure they must ask during your prenatal visits, too, though I don't know the specifics of it. From what I understand, you'll be sent to your home country (effectively deported, though maybe or maybe not stated that way) if you give birth out of wedlock.

If you go through the entire process at home (conception to birth) then my understanding is that you can come in as a single mum. Go figure.

Thanks for the feedback Expat Sueno. Not what I wanted to hear but needed to hear. What do you mean they are not "allowed"? What would be implications for work and living?

By Expat Sueño• 31 Jan 2010 21:05
Expat Sueño

I seriously doubt that you would be able to be treated, cinnamon. Single women are not "allowed" to be pregnant so I cannot see the medical establishment helping you get there, either.

It's OK to be a single parent, but you'll need to get the pregnancy part out of the way first.

Sorry for the discouraging news :(

I've run through all the posts and wonder whether the only option is IVF or is IUI offered in Doha? And, perhaps more importantly for me...are single women welcomed at the hospitals? What would the response be in the broader community as well if a single woman pursues IUI/IVF? Am considering transferring to Doha soon but personal plans include fertility treatment and I'm trying to figure out viable options... any information apreciated!

HI Qatarkiwi,

Thank you very much for the information. It's really helpful. I'll only be coming there after my husband get's his RP and then I supposed I'd also have to get it. Then I can finally register at the hospital. I'm currently undergoing treatment back home.

You were very helpful. I will contact you as soon as I get to Qatar. Which would most probably be sometime in February next year.

For Hamad hospital it is substantially cheaper if you have a RP (there is a schedule of fees on Hamad hospitals website).

If you have a RP then you have to apply for a healthcard at one of the local public health centres. Then you have to get a referral from the health centre to the IVF clinic. Then you have to go to Hamad(womens hospital) and make an appointment(I don't know if you can do it by phone). On the day of your first appointment you have to first pay for the consultation and 'open a file'. I am not sure what the wait is for the first consultation appointment, I think I had to wait about three weeks but that was about a year and a half ago so it could be different now.

When I was going I had the doctors direct phone number so was able to contact the doctor directly but I dont know if any of the other doctors did that.

I hope this is helpful.

Dear Becs,

I'll be coming to qatar sometime next year February and would like to start IVF treatment immediately since I've been given a 6 month window in which to undergo treatment. How long does it take to register at Hamad hospital and what is the procedure? My husband will be arriving in Qatar early January. May be he could start the process before I come if it take long. Hope to hear from you.

Thanks,

hi its bec again i actually ended up doing treatment for ivf at hamad hospital and after the initial round around it actually was ok. I would recommend treatment there but bear in mind its hard getting in the system but once you do its ok. If anyone is thinking of treatment there and need a bit of help working the system let me know and I could walk you though.

hi,

I have also tryed the hamad hospital route and agree dr are great but reception terrible - on my first visit i was there over 3 hours and getting the total run around - it was very annoying and tell you what felt like walking out a few times as totally overwhelming - going though ivf is hard enought your dont want the added stress of trying to work your way thought the hospital system!!!Another thing that concerns me there is that you cant get in touch with anyone over the phone - so frightened if something went wrong i would have no one to contact. i do not know of any other clinic in doha that offer treatment but was wondering if you have had any luck at finding any.
