Maintaining the Speed Limit

Kikomodos
By Kikomodos

On our way to school, a quick 3 to 4 times of flashing I saw in my rear view mirror and before I knew it, I had to avoid this Land Cruiser who just overtake to my right made a serious cut to the left in front of me, and somehow I managed to stay away from danger today.

My son asked, "What was your mistake?" I paused and thought for about 3 seconds...

"I think the driver of that car wanted me to give way so he can zoom his way as a traffic violator because I am maintaining at 100kmh which is the speed limit on this road." I said. "Probably, he got upset that I did not immediately noticed what he wanted to do."

Canarybird, weapons are not a joke and should be locked away safely and not carried in a car. And yes there are people that Collect weapons, I have been one of them. I had over 50 weapons, from small pistols to Machine Guns - nothing wrong with that.

When it comes to this Thread, I agree with the comments of TexGary and dmigtysolomon

"bother with"? like would I get upset and yell or cuss him for driving nuts? I probably wouldn't do that if he DIDN'T have any guns in the vehicle that I could see.

I doubt you saw any statistics like that since we don't use the electric chair in Texas, we use lethal injection for the death penalty. However, we do lead the nation in executions by lethal injection. If you don't approve, I'd suggest that you don't commit a capital offense in Texas...pretty simple.

I can also tell you that we have a 100% sucess rate with people executed by lethal injection not being repeat offenders. Once they go through that, they don't go out and rape/kill anymore...amazing stuff.

Yes, he was supposed to be a Texas Ranger (kind of like a sheriff but they are responsible for the entire state) so I suppose he was playing a Texan. There are alot of things about gun control in the US that I think don't get talked about because it wouldn't be so much fun to tear us down if the whole truth was known. Just throw the negative spin on it and use us like the dirty punching bag we are.

There is a much larger issue at stake there though. It is about freedom of choice and not allowing the government to tell you what you can and can't do. I appreciate and respect my right to choose.

We have completely hijacked this thread!!!

I remember that Texas has the highest rate PER STATE FOR the Death penalty by the electric chaiR in the nation.

you're right about the Darwinian theory at work in that instance.

I've driven in the US for a very long time without ever even seeing a gun pulled in heavy traffic much less having one pointed at me or shooting. However I tend to let such generalizations go because some people have their minds made up about it and it won't do any good to debate.

But you know us Texans...we are just looking for any reason to shoot someone. We are the worst of all Americans, the most aggressive and angry.

/that is what I like to call SARCASM...if you don't know, look it up.

I used to shoot myself (air rifle)and did enjoy this as a hobby very much, but even they are dangerous if in the wrong hands.

I did meet an American once(posted a week or so ago on NAZIS)he had several different weapons and actually showed me - from a pistol to a rifle in his house as a hobby. This scares me to death because they can and do kill.

I know that many feel that their ego is cut if they don't have the lead and the racing from one red traffic light to the other just to be one car in front. This is why I leave home early it is just a rat reace every day when all I want to do is to get to work and home again safely.

I will and do give way when I can...and if it makes sense...I just meant that the time I didn't move over, the entire road was empty and for whatever reason, they wanted to be in the one lane that had me in it!!

I will admit that I will NOT give way if its dangerous for me. I've had some folks come up and flash their lights behind me and there is absolutely NO WHERE to go(bus on one side, truck on other)..I mean..what do they want me to do, sprout wings and fly?? Usually I'm going a bit over speedlimit anyway..I know, I know..bad me...but give me a break...if drivers would get two brain cells and rub them together, they'd know that when there is not enough room to move over, they HAVE to wait..

I had a local driver follow me all the way home from City Center when he thought I had cut him off (which I hadn't, he was just in such a dang hurry, he didn't bother looking ahead/to the side, of him!) Perhaps its a good thing some nations DON'T have the right to bear arms!!

Guns are a very good thing in the right hands...My son hunts and is a very practiced shot. In fact, so am I but I don't hunt unless its to get rid of some feral animals or snakes. Anyone with half a brain knows how to store a gun safely. Its never the gun that kills, its the person behind it. Those that would use a gun to kill, would be killing anyway even if guns weren't available as its in their mindset. Takes all kinds.

On the other hand I do believe we all have to do our part to keep the flow of traffic without endangering others, and with a little insight to just what traffic rules are - even if we know most people don't obey them - it is not a reason for us as an individual to ignore them right!!!

It is not for us to jusdge what others do right but to judge if what we do is right.

The point have been not all drivers are peaceful and get out of the way (I saw it on the news it was in Chicago) there are aggressive drivers all over the world an here if you overtake a local he will do his best to follow up on that. Glad we don't have firearms on the loose in GB otherwise there would be lot of maniacs out there on the loose.

I don't believe that Americans are any more violent than other races but do have easy access to firearms (for me) dangerous enough having a firearm at all.

you forgot to mention that with those that shoot due to not being able to pass(altho I've never heard of it done for THAT reason..others but not that!) its Darwins theory in action...if you act like an idiot in Texas, you take your chances of being put down permanently. CAnarybird, you had to mention that twice...is that to make sure you got your point across that Americans are violent or that you are upset that the UK can't handle guns?

If you are driving in the center lane and both the left and right lanes are open and someone still flashes their lights at you, they are just really bad drivers (and possibly bad people) looking to be mean or rude.

In that instance you are correct, maintain your speed and lane and they should go around.

All of what I've been talking about applies primarily to open highway driving. In town driving is obviously different for a number of reasons (merging side streets, traffic circles, intersections, residential areas, pedestrians, etc).

Still, if someone comes flying up behind me in town and I can safely move over, I do. Beyond being a "courtesy" I find that if I just stay out of their way, they are more likely to crash either alone or at very least with someone other than me. However, in the original case as described by Kikomodos, that was just a really bad driver and as Novita pointed out, it happens every day here (not just by locals, but all kinds of people).

I think it is (again) customary to allow faster cars to pass in the left lane here and in *most* places. Maybe not Turkey or Iran but last I checked, that is just 2 countries and there are a couple more out there...at least 3 or 4 I think.

You may feel it is your right to drive in the fast lane and drive exactly the speed limit, but every place I have ever been has had a large number of people that drive at least a little over the speed limit. If you insist in holding them up (right or wrong) you are CAUSING a traffic issue.

I wonder why people who drive 98 when the speed limit is 100 insist on driving in the passing lane? Is it because the buses move slower than you and that is not ok with you? You want to go faster than they are going, so you move into the passing lane. Now someone wants to go faster than you and suddenly that is no ok.

Basically everyone that drives faster than you is a maniac, and everyone that drives slower than you is a moron.

There are many people here that drive MUCH faster than me. When I see them coming, I move. It isn't difficult, it is actually quite easy. I get out of the way as quickly and SAFELY as I can.

As Ksarat said, nobody will flashed you in the middle lane if the left lane is open.

this is the general (customary rule) that most drivers nowadys doesn'y know or pretend not to know (because they were not taught properly in driving school) and I dare you to ask any driving instructor or traffic experts about this thing...

In an open highway (open, not slow moving traffic), you have to stay on the middle lane or normal lane and drive to the speed limit. If the car ahead of you is driving slower than you (whether you are driving on speed limit or lower), you can always overtake on the left lane (making sure that its free). And you need to go back to the middle or normal lane at once (of course if there is a space or free for you to go back. If there is none, then you just have to stay on the fast lane on speed limit and take the first opportunity to return to the normal lane because there might be some rowdies or emergency vehicles that may be approaching behind. Once they passed and you wanna overtake again, you're free to go. As I have said, whenever there is a faster car on your rear and you are on the fast lane (whether you are travelling on the speed limit or not), you have to give way to the faster car.

BTW, you can always YELL or BADMOUTH the "stupid guys", just DON'T OPEN YOUR WINDOWS so you can release your tension and frustration. Right, Texgary?

Idiots don't control the traffic they just make it unsafe for all other participants on the road and often it is not convienent to move into the right lane if you are considering turning off left as atthe end it is impossible to change lanes.

What you don't understand even driving normally - I did not cause the crash but others because they were and are not in control of thier cars, don't ask me about the run around for papers etc. but rather ask why did it happen. Was I careless - NO - because I stick to the rules and others don't.

You can't teach people how to drive online - you have to cancel driving licences to make peope aware they can't drive as they want - and I was hit four times by Indain drivers and once by a Sudanese so you tell me who are the bad drivers???

all you points are well-taken, well, canarybird, can you tell us your experiences after you were bumped (or crashed by other vehicles). Was the disturbance to your normal life comfortable?

This is my only concern. Yes, we maybe right, but are you ready to argue this in front of the local authority (which as everybody perceived to be unequally imposed rules on the inhabitants of this country or other ME countries). I am an expat here and anything that may disturb my normal day should be avoided. The last thing I want to happen is arguing with anybody on the road that I am right and the other part is wrong (where both our cars are wrecked) and you have to explain to your copany what happens and that you have not done your work forthe day and that you have to go to the police station, and so on and so on...............

Can we just be a liitle patient in understanding these rowdies and just give them a small space to overtake (whether we are right or wrong?). Or you wanted to imposed your righteousness because you believe that you are 100 % right and that you are 100 % assured that we are equally protected by this authorities?

desire to drive like a maniac make me have to move to the right? That's ridiculous. If I am going the speed limit I have every right to be in the fast lane. I don't care if it's customary to move to the right and let them pass. It's also "customary" to follow the traffic laws of a country ie speed limit. I have the right to be there if I am going the speed limit. I have long wanted to create a bumper sticker that says something like:

"flashing your lights at me will NOT make me move over"

Hey look at this for an answer to you...

First option, maintain your lane and your speed and keep driving, that guy will SURELY TAKE the left lane for overtaking you IF IT IS EMPTY...

Second, if that guy is stupid (which I dont accept that people are here) you might as well move to the extreme right lane and stay safe ...

but 99.9 times out of 100 the people will overtake from the left lane (fast track) if it is empty, if it isnt empty then they will wait for it to get empty or just find another lane to overtake...but people dont disturb the drivers who arent in the fast track...TRUST ME!!!

I mean get yourself to the other lane, why do you insist on driving in the fast lane when you want to drive at YOUR OWN PACE...

TexGary, that's exactly what happened to me, I didn't had time to react. I knew that if I would quickly move to the right will even make things worst moving in an abrubt or sudden change of lane.

Customary is one thing. Following basic traffic rules is another. I disagree with you with the customary thing. Because that "rule" varies from person to person, depending on your bias, it is elastic to fit your personal interest. As compared to traffic rules and regulations, it is there for all of us to follow, regardless of your nationality, color, car, speed, and what side of the bed you woke up.

Obviusly you have never driven in Turkey nor in Iran - hmm I have there is no common courtesy just a tiger in every car wanting to reach a destination on time.

On the note of time if everyone would plan their time better there would be less accidents.

This is particularly true for the "passing lane" which again, is not only what that left lane is here, but in many parts of the world.

If everyone obeyed that common courtesy there would be far less cause for the bad drivers to pass on the right.

I have to laugh at the above even in Amiland they were shooting each other on highways because of traffic jams.

I have been driving for over 35 years my dear boy, I never had an accident before I came to Doha, and the rowdies are not at all, all LOCALS there are all nationalities doing this even Brits and Amis.

Main stream traffic does not always allow you to take the right lane, I leraned how to drvie in Germany where people are disciplined and uderstand that there is a way to drive safely, and may I just add here that your fellow compatriots also don't use indicators and are driving very fast themselves.

If you are driving on the highway you should and must stay in the right lane if you are slower but if you are in main stream traffic you have to go with the flow but always be prepared for the unexpected so be alert.

Even driving safe does not protect you from an accident, having right does not always save your life so it is not necessary - but I will not allow anyone to force me of the street I will take the number and complain to the police this is the right way.

getting my point. I am not telling you what to do, I think you are old enough. I am just advicing you to stay away from any (smallest) discomfort that maybe brought by self-proclaiming that you are a law-abiding road citizen.

You have said it right, there are a lot of rowdies there and you wanna argue with them?, They are locals, you will not win with them. Stay away from anything that may interupt your good life here. Better be safe than sorry.

BTW, we are talking about more-than-one lane roads and not single lane road (you guys are funny, hehehehehe). You are exposing your personality

It isn't just customary here, it is customary pretty much everywhere I've ever driven that if someone approaches you driving faster than you, you should move over and let them pass. This remains true if you are going under the speed limit and they are driving normally, or if you are going at the speed limit or even a little over and they are just going faster.

This is particularly true for the "passing lane" which again, is not only what that left lane is here, but in many parts of the world.

If everyone obeyed that common courtesy there would be far less cause for the bad drivers to pass on the right.

The very fast drivers (you know...the guy in the Landcruiser) do need to learn a little courtesy too. Sometimes they approach the rear of a vehicle in the left lane much quicker than that driver anticipated and there is not yet a place for them to move over (as they are passing a slower moving car as well). The Landcruisers need to learn that just a little patience will get everyone there safely. However, as soon as there is a gap, the slower car should move over to the right lane.

I have stopped driving anywhwere nowadays as the traffic is more brutal than before and forcing people into other lanes when there is no room to move over is very dangerous. I am glad when I can get to work safely and home safely, so I leave an hour earlier and go home a half an hour later to avoid main stream traffic.

I have had five accidents in the past two years because drivers could not stop in time or crossed three lanes without signalling nor looking at oncoming traffic and being in the left lane have been actually forced off the road. My idea is follow your instinct rules don't apply.

It means stay calm and don't get harrassed until you can change lane again, let them flash and let them harass you just keep driving at your speed and focus on your driving and you getting from A to B safely. BTW it is not only land cruisers and not only locals harassing many there nationalities are guilty of this procedure.

What you have to do is just focus on your driving and not let other drivers make you nervous otherwise there is a possibility that you will have an accident.

Well said Canarybird. Be safe.

I think what good we can get from tmigtysolomon is that we'll just have to succumb our rights whether you are right and in the right lane, we MUST by any means pass through where we think we reach our destination safe and sound.

If everyboody would drive like you - it would be great - so if you want to cross over to take a left how do you do it in main stream traffic - say AL Waab Street of Salwa Road hmm I have seen this policy crossing three lanes at once and the results. LOL

If the speed limit is 100kmph means it is for us. Not for land cruisers. They have different law and we have different. for them they can press the peddle to the metal and flash lights and they can take law in their hands and teach us a lesson on the road itself by cutting the lane dangerously in front of ours. don't worry. You will learn to pardon them..

"Give a positive response and do not confuse Kiko or the others".

1) Don't tell me what to do.

2) Traffic laws are not effective and in the morning traffic you have to go with the flow.

3) Right land traffic gets caught up on sevice road traffic trying to bypass traffic queues which causes more confusion and more accidents.

4) Overtaking on the right lane is not just common it is the run of the day.

5) There is no disciplined traffic in Doha, so everyone has to fight for the right to stay in their lane - often being forced to move over by incompetent drivers.

6) I learned to drive with respect for others and to follow the HIGHWAY CODE this odesn't exist here so mostly it is every man for himself and to try to arriive at your destination without being harmed.

7) I have been crashed from the back and the front and from the side by drivers disrespecting the rules and the driver has a right to protect himself/herself from danger.

8) Traffic flow does not always allow you to drive on the right lane and trying to change a lane in peak time traffic is very dangerous.

feel free. As i have said, think of the uncomfort of explaining your side when there is already an accident you maybe involved with. Better be on the safe side rather than pretending to right when you are on the wrong lane.

If you are on the right lane and a "stupid driver" bump you or hit intentionally (of course they would always say unintentionally or accident "nga, eh"), will you still argue with my advice? Give a positive response and do not confuse Kiko or the others.

It will do you no harm if you follow my advice but if you insist on your insight, well................

dmigtysolomon, let me tell you that RECKLESS LANE or OVERSPEEDING LANE does NOT exist!!!!!!!!!! It is not physically there, it is in the driver's mind and driving behavior!

There is no such thing as reckless or overspeeding lane! Where do you find this lane? And you are even happier about reckless drivers and traffic violators as against the ones who TRY THEIR BEST to OBEY the traffic rules!

Your rule works only if all the traffic obey the rules, however, here they are overtaking right left and centre, so it is not a case of being right it is a case of trying to save your own life with all the traffic rowdies on the road.

They cross three lanes at a time without the blink of an eyelid so traffic rules don't count here OR???

you have to stay on the right lane if you are not passing (of course unless it is heavy traffic and everybody is moving slow)..... common sense my friend. If you do not want to follow my advice, may you always have a nice trip on the road. Whether is is OVERSPEEDING LANE OR RECKLESS LANE, it is still the PASSING LANE

you persist that you are right when you are on the wrong lane. I tell whether you are on speed limit, you are not supposed to be on the passing lane. If others are reckless or overspeeding, that's not your problem, but if somebody bump you behind, whether you are right or wrong, can you just imagine the uncomfort it will bring you.

My friend, this is an advice and not a discussion. If you are that good, I hope I won't meet on the road on the same situation because I will do the same as the other car have done to you (or maybe worse...).

Be a defensive driver and not a righteous one on the wrong lane

dmigtysolomon, I totally agree with you, left lane is overtaking lane, except when it is heavy traffic. If we all had been better in keeping right lane it would have been less problems on the road and we could let the Reckless drivers do what they want in the Left lane.

you are maintaining your speed limit but you notice someones car fast approaching you and by your judgement is faster than you, it is customary to give way specifically if you are on the passing lane. Whether he or she is overspeeding, still it is your customary duty to give way.

Actually this is the common mistake of many drivers occupying the passing lane (sometimes called the speed lane), whatever your speed, if there is someone faster than you are (and you can always see it thru your rear mirror), the driver has to give way. Best move is always stay in the middle road or non-passing lane when you are travelling whether on normal speed or slow phase or on the speed limit. You only go to the passing lane if you wanna pass or the lane is totally free and nobody at your back that you can see.

Good day Kiko and to evryone!!!!!!!!
