Moving to Qatar
By cassandra238 •
I'm moving to Qatar this summer with my son, we've been told we're getting a furnished apartment in the Tatweer compound, near the Doha English Speaking School. Is this an ok area? And we also get a shipping allowance, what should I bring from the UK?
Many thanks
I suggest you bring medicines or your kid's supplement/vitamins. Antibiotics are hard to get here even if you have prescriptions from your doctor (from home), they will not honor it unless it is prescribed by Doctors here in Qatar.
Welcome to Qatar! :)
I have been told by another Qler who goes by the name of DaRuDe, that Amazon US, now deliver to Qatar.
There you go. Now you can more or less anything from Amazon.
As you will be staying in Tatweer which suggests that you are going to be teaching at DESS, Just a wide guess.
DESS should put lights on its outside perimeter.
step away from DESS gate.
The area around DESS is pretty nice. :0)
Many thanks Mandilulur, I'm quite happy with an apartment, just wanted to check that it was in an ok location, I've heard some horror stories about teacher accommodation.
britishwoman said "I recommend pasta and sauce and toastie bags as you cann't get toastie machines here."
I bought my toastie machine a couple of weeks back from Carrefour, and am enjoying cheese and tomato tosties on a regular basis :p
And pasta and sauce is available in nearly every supermarket, but Megamart have some great UK and US sauces available as well.
BHS and Marks and Sparks are here, and I get most of my cloths and bedding from them. I have a Shop & Ship account with Aramex and regularly order from Amazon UK or Amazon US whoever have the best price (takes 1 to 2 weeks for stuff to arrive). And I have a Kindle Fire with which to download all of my books, and an iPad for my favourite magazines.
You can get most stuff here, honestly there is nothing to stress about especially with good access to Amazon.
Try adding a few onions and use Wensleydale .... Mmmmmmmmmm :o)
Ooops, just saw Tatweer. Yes, it's OK, a bit apartment-y but in a nice central residential location. Very near DESS.

Yes, the area around DESS is known as the TV round-about since it is where Al Jazeera's station is. Will you be living on the DESS premises? Very nice. Lots of nearby shops and food outlets.

Fortunately, Mr Hippo, I don't need to worry about a school place for my son because I'm a teacher and your useful advice about Qatar helped me decide to accept the job in Doha.
Books shouldn't be a problem with my Amazon account, but I'm not looking forward to driving around in Doha in my little rental car - I will be looking to buy the biggest 4x4 I can afford on my teacher's salary. It will probably be quite an old SUV with several dents, but I'm not fussy.
Do you know the area around DESS? I'm told it's quiet and the apartment is "nice", on the map it looks very central.
Any family coming to Doha needs to bring with them a very large pile of money to pay the school fees, plus an even larger supply of patience for when you are told that the school you wanted to send your children to have no places available for your little darlings and that the waiting list is full up.
I would echo the comment made about books, as the bookshops in Doha are very poor.
As for the driving in Doha, I would recommend a life insurance policy, a paid-up funeral plan, a strong faith in God and a LandCruiser.
I recommend pasta and sauce and toastie bags as you cann't get toastie machines here.
just come in QATAR...very peacefull place to stay...

Many thanks for the welcome.
I'm a big user of amazon.co.uk, can you get stuff delivered in Qatar? I also have a Kindle - will I be able to download stuff in Doha?
Welcome to qatar
Books! There are essentially no bookstores in Qatar. DVDs, there are no places to rent.
