I am only going of someone else,s experiance, this was in NSW so other states may be different. But considering that the national immunisation programme is federal not state i would guess that this is true of most states.
Best that you get one before leaving. As I said the chances of your child being accepted into school with out immunisation will depend on the school most puplic schools will require the certificate before being allowed to attend.
Andrew11121 - While patients do have the right to refuse care a child in this instance is not considered a patient and considered a charge of there parent and is under the parents care. From what the couple have told me its pretty tough going to get a certificate of non immunisation in OZ because of this, the govt. has the right to go to the lengths of removing the child if they think that your application for this certificate is one of selfishness and doesnt consider the childs welfare.
im australian working overseas, i have chosen not to immunise my kiddies, and we may be returning to oz early next year, so i wanted to make sure i have all bases covered :-) thanks for the info greatly appreciated!
Pretty confusing huh? you can elect at birth not to have your child immunised but this requires you to put forward a case to a social worker for the reasons you have chosen and believe me they have to be pretty strong and contain medical fact., not just you have read somewhere that certain groups they beleive now that immunization is the cause off ADD ECT ECT, and you are issued with a certificate of non immunization regarding this, i know of a couple who went through this process and beleive me its not easy. It is not law but is expected that children have all immunizations because it is free. Schools can refuse entry on the grounds that your child is not immunised and the reasoning for this is that they have to consider the well fare of other students as well as your child who through the fact is not immunised can infact become quite ill. From what the couple also told me should you child become ill from any of the deseases that can be immunised against then it is basically your resonsability and while there is a health care system that is free that this option is not available to you should this happen.(how true this is I do not know) Just a question are you an Australian Citizen living O/S or Applying for Australian citizenship? If applying for citizenship or wishing to work in Australia and sending your child to an australian school after living O/S then you will be required to have your child immunised.
I think those sorts of laws would be state based, since it is the states that administer the schools. In which case it will depend on which state you anticipate your children going to school.
Perhaps check on the website of your relevant department of health, or failing that department of education.
Perhaps too try emailing a doctors surgery or school admissions office to ask directly.
Speaking (as I usually do) from the point of total ignorance, I would have thought that vaccinations were not legally required as patients have a right to refuse care?? Like you say, the immunisation is optional, but may be required for schooling...
i know that vaccinations are free, the thing I'm really interested in is if its compulsory for the actual vaccinations, i know that in oz, kids wont be accepted into schools if they haven't had it done, so I'm after any laws if there is stating that by law i have to get them done

P.S Oryx very very funny
When babies are born in Australia they are usually left to soak in VB next to the barbie for a few hours as part of their baptism.
This usually protects them from diseases and dingo bites for the first 6 months and a strong sporty constitution throughout their lives.
Don?
Good Canadian - i sniff an oxymoron!
oh ok - if you call harmless 'good' I guess you can call Canadians good. :)

At least we've stopped mulesing our kids. At last.
Oryx, as a good Canadian (if of course there is such a thing) I have to comment on your comment. Loved it.
using the inferix injection so instead of a separat injection and oral for polio its an all in one if you are an aus citizen then vaccination is free.
