soaring divorce rates

The Gulf Time today announced the the government is taking steps to curb the growing divorce rate in Qatar, which as surged to its highest level of 2% of all couples in a given year.

Using the most recent data, that would push Qatar up to 9th in the world (when last ranked it was 12th).

In the US the rate has declined, so that it now ranks fifth. The biggest risers have been Qatar, KSA and the old Soviet block countries--Belarus, Russia, Ukraine. Commentators have credited the drop in US divorces to the recession (too expensive to divorce) but they have also cited the recession for the reason in the RISE of divorces in the former Soviet Union. Seem odd.

Any thoughts on the reasons for the rising divorce rates here and other Gulf countries?

Divorce rules in Muslim countries have always been more relaxed than in Christian ones. It has only been as Christian countries have become more secular and multi-cultural that divorce rules have relaxed. In countries in which the Christian religious establishment still has a strong hold, such as Ireland, divorce laws remain pretty strict--in fact illegal until relatively recently.

If it follows the pattern of other prosperous nations, my guess is that the divorce rate in Qatar is a result of

1. Increased education and earning power of women--i.e. they are less financial independent on their husbands.

2. General increase in prosperity, which means less people must stay in marriage for financial reasons.

3. As more people get divorced the stigma reduces.

4. Having children is delayed in newly married couples while the wife pursues her career. The provides a window in which ill-suited couples can divorce without worrying about what it will mean for the children.

I am sure, of course, there are plenty of factors peculiar to the nationality and ethnicity of those involved, as is the case in any region.

The rise indicated could be simply that there is a better system of data collection and statistics analysis, not necessarily an actual increase.

Have the divorce rates in the West declined because fewer people are marrying ?

The reasons for higher divorce rates in the Gulf are many. The society is changing. I suppose the single factor is "expectations".

Women are more educated, have careers and are more independent and confident in themselves. Perhaps many of the males are unable to cope with this and their expectations of marital relationships are different from their spouse.

But those rules haven't changed, yet the rate is rising. Why the sudden rise?
