If it is known that one is staying in a sexually repressed society what would be the motivation to go naked in public places and then also compain about being ogled at ... are these people plain simple idiots or a case of calling for (with an undertone of almost begging for)attention, when there is none.

The difference is that, unlike men living in sexually repressed societies, most middleclass Western men would not take a woman being topless at a public beach or pool as an indication that she wants to have intimate relations with each and every man there.

topless people in public (and old men in speedos) and NO it's not because I'm jealous--why would I be jealous when it's usually chubby middle aged women who are topless? I simply believe the body is beautiful and god given. I respect God and myself way too much to degrade myself by letting every men in sight ogle me. Gross.

This is NOT OK in my compound. I don't think any compound would knowingly allow this. They know the authorities would not look favorably on it. I also have teenage sons and am trying to teach them to respect women. It's hard when some women don't respect themselves.

Bcause the above posters think other "Asian" men dont see enough of naked women in their life as much as the western men do. Let them live with that belief, we'll just keep looking and doing what we do best :D

My colleague's wife caught some Arab men looking into their villa from a roof top (they have teenage daughters). She phoned the police, who confronted the men--turns out they had cameras and binoculars, and the police caught one in the middle of (well umm, shall we say enjoying his own company). Supposedly he was arrested and left the country for fear of deportation.

Someone I know was reported for indecent behaviour or something like that for being topless in the garden of her own villa. A neighbour on his rooftop caught sight of her and called the police. She was only reprimanded and told to stay behind closed doors in that condition.

Well, if done at a public beach IN THE WEST, fine, as people who do not want to see it can move on, and most people don't care anyway. Doing it at a compound pool in the ME is, IMHO, not appropriate, as there may be people who consider this, for different reasons (for example, adolesnts, small children )inappropriate. One should be considerate. And having a bit of a tan line, well, not a big deal considering one can be in the sun by the pool at lot more than in the West.

Plus, is it really nice to be leeched at?

I read about a taxi driver that called the police because there was a couple necking in his cab! They were deported AND have now been sentenced to jail! Who'd think to be wary of their cabbie?!

Shariah law dictates that when swimming, women's property must remain submerged at all times so as not to attract unwanted male attention. I hope those who violate this law will understand the consequences of breaking the law and respect the others around/their personal feelings.

People begin to take advantage.

Then someone complains.

Government authorities finally intervene and impement stricter rules.

Then people complain that they are being victimised.

IT IS PROHIBITED IN PUBLIC BEACHES BUT A POOL IN A COMPOUND IS NOT CONSIDERED PUBLIC.

I think more delight than problems. Although I have not seen many topless women at compound pool, I've seen plenty in tiny bikinis, and there were plenty of non-Western men that were clearly thrilled to be there.

I think the assumption in many large compounds is that they are Western in spirit if not if not in fact--i.e. the non-Westerners who choose to live there accept that Western social practices prevail (alcohol, small swimsuits, etc. will be visible).

After all, like the 5 star hotel bars that routinely serve locals, these places are businesses and they fill a niche. Nothing will be done by the authorities so long as they confine the practices to the compound.

As long as no one complains to the authorities, its fine. You never know there may be someone in the building who could do that, whatever be his/her nationality. Since its against the law, its better to refrain from it. However, I have seen many roof-top swimming pools in Dubai where expat ladies swim topless after the evening falls and it's dark.

I would say, don't do it. Even if one were to live on a 100% western compound (not that i think those exist here), what if a resident has non Western,or even qatari visitors? Could cause problems. Or delight...lol

Depends. Probably not so common on weekends at most--more likely on weekday afternoons when just the ladies are around.

I'd say depends on the compound. It would not be ok on the compound that I live on.
