Diabetes tests to be done without appointments for a week
Diabetes is one of the leading causes of ill health and death the world over. Pressure cooker conditions at work, unhealthy eating habits and a sedentary life style all lead to the dreaded disease.
To celebrate the World Health Day, Hamad Medical Corporation will conduct special diabetes screening tests at all hospitals and health centres in Qatar. The tests, which will run for a whole week starting Friday, will be done without prior appointments.
Mobile clinics and temporary tents will be set up at different places for screening, The Peninsula reported.
HMC will set two tents in Al Wakrah Souq Waqif and Al Khor Park tomorrow to screen for diabetes for free. In collaboration with Al Wakrah Sports Club, HMC will also assign a trainer to give guidance on how to do exercises in the public area of AL Wakrah Souq Waqif.
Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) will conduct diabetes screening at health centres without prior appointments.
Health promotion and awareness lectures on diabetes will be held at selected schools. Diabetes screening will also be done without prior appointments at selected private hospitals.
Qatar Diabetes Association will assign a mobile clinic and a team of healthcare professionals at Aspire Park today. The Youth Challenge Diabetes Camp 2016 will be held between from April 9 to 13.
Action on Diabetes, in collaboration with Maersk Qatar Petroleum, will assign a mobile clinic in Katara tomorrow as part of World Health Day activities.
Qatar, along with countries from across the world, is highlighting the most significant issues related to diabetes.
“Qatar pays special attention to diabetes particularly because 17 per cent of adults in the country are diabetic.
“Diabetes was the No. 4 top cause of deaths in Qatar in the last decade. For that reason, we’ve launched National Diabetes Strategy 2016-2022 to create a developed vision for diabetic healthcare and define a way of improving health and wellness in the country in order to reduce the numbers of people who suffer from the disease,” Minister of Public Health HE Dr Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari said.
This is a great initiative. As someone who has diabetes in the family, i feel that it is also important to educate the people about how to lower the risks of getting diabetes - walking, exercise, lifestyle changes etc
This is great news, making people aware of Diabetes and the effects that go with it is a great step. In my opinion medication is not the best way to deal with Diabetes because this costs every country MILLIONS every year, I honestly believe that with the right advice, right amount of exercise and the right diet most people would not be diabetic. The more money that can be saved on medication means that more money can be spent on Diabetes Awareness. Good job Hamad Medical Corporation, more people world wide should be doing the same.
