Child found after 10 hours in Qatar desert

Police in Qatar were able to reunite a three-year-old with her family following a 10-hour search and rescue operation in the desert. The girl was reported missing after her family, along with a few other families, ventured outdoors for a fun outing in the Shemal district.

The trip — from 8pm to 5am — turned out to be singularly harrowing for the Arab expatriate family who had joined other families for an evening outing in the Gashamiya desert area.

According to Qatari media, the child's father had left his family with the other families, ensured all camping arrangements were in place, and returned to Doha. However, when he reached Doha, he was told that his daughter, Lamays, had gone missing. His brother assured him that the police had been informed and a search initiated.

The Ministry of Interior officials pressed into service 40 search vehicles carrying a range of equipment that included generators and diving gear amid concerns that the child may have slipped into one of the wells in the area. Local residents joined the search.

Rescuers eventually found the girl in the early hours near a farmhouse close to the Shemal highway, around 2,500 metres from the place where the family had camped. "God has saved the child," the child's father said. "And I am grateful to the authorities for rescuing my daughter."

Cause the maids r there to look after the children and tht is sad...I saw an example last night where the children had t/shirts on tht read "I Love Mama" however, they were with the maid and she herself was a head or so bigger than the children.

Parents should be punished.

My goodness - if parents can do it to their kids in IKEA - eat without a care in the world - and then go to look for their little one later - without being distraught; then anywhere is fair game!

And then again at the petrol station!! Just because the girl was crying for something; Mummy walked on ahead. Just wondering if Mummy would have crossed the road and allowed the girl to cross herself - with the space invaders driving in a frenzy!

but outright blaming the parents is to me not proper. Let there be an investigation (proper) and then make the recommendations!

Listen if u don't want to calm down, let us end this discussion. You always push things too far and think by that you will have a point. Shoot them? Come on..grow up you sound like a 5 yr old.

When u go to the desert, u r not going to a friendly environment so u should take ur precautions. The child is urs and not the responsibility of anybody else! The other families have nothing to do with it! People who have kids, obviously u don't, know that even when they go to the park they have to take precautions! How would it be if they are going to the desert with a 3 yr old.

Anyways, it seems that being irresponsible is a trend these days if u feel it is normal to leave a kid in the desert...

on the desert or with families? Let gather all those families and shoot them one by one for negligence! Is that what you want?

And then we give the child to you to take care, BUT please, no DESERT outing, Okay?

taht said, the parents left the child in the desert? Starightened your facts. I agree that there were mistakes here but make the facts first and then recommend any action/s. But outright blaming the parents is plain judgmental!

Flor1212 can u plz explain what in the world does the fact that I am Lebanese (and proud of it) have to do with anything in this story!

Anyways, you are right, it is only normal that parents leave their 3 yr old, mind u in the desert and only get to know at dark that their child is missing.

Well keep on living in ur utopia lala world and good luck.

I just hope you don't have any children...

The Qatari Police has come out strong yet again! The parents need to be given the benefit of doubt in this case as one cannot expect a 2 yr old child to walk away at 8 pm in the night [pitch dark in the desert, no street lights],kids are usually terrified of the dark and a strange place that too. To be found well ie, no dehydration/dizzy after 10 hrs is yet again a mystery as no child that young can survive so long with out even water. The baby’s stool right after discovery needs to be analyzed , to ascertain the nature of food intake. Even the condition of the baby’s diapers ,and the baby’s dress to ascertain the level and kind of dirt accumulated, need to be analyzed. Looks like the baby was kidnapped then latter abandoned because of the large number of police vehicles combing that area.

You are a Lebanese and your example is US? My goodness, someone is confused here!

You blame the father? You blame the mother? Did you read the story.

So what are you suggesting, chain the child so she won't go astray? All your view are speculative? Was the father there? Why did the father left? How did the child went astray? Was that in the story?

And you want me to agree with you? Then let's put the parents in the firing squad! Satisfied?

My dear flor, judgmental is when u say to a person, ur too thin, too fat, too old too young... That is not judgmental that is common sense and stating a fact THESE PARENTS ARE IRRESPONSIBLE AND IN A COUNTRY LIKE THE STATES WOULD FACE A PROBATIONARY PERIOD WHERE THE GOV. WOULD WATCH TO SEE IF THEY ARE WORTH RAISING A CHILD!!!

Unfortunately irresponsible parents are a feature that I have noticed a lot of in Qatar - for example, I wince whenever I see a minor - baby sometimes in the front passenger seat of a Land Cruiser, or sitting on Daddy's knee whilst he attempts to manoeuvre his two tonnes of death and destruction around the highways and byways. I chose Land Cruiser to suit the point I am making (read between the lines). I sometimes wonder when noticing parents, kids and helpers in the Malls if parents have to enquire of their housemaids the names of the kids that are in the housemaids charge - I exagerate for effect but you get the gist.

what a huge psychological trauma it must have been for the little girl. being alone, ur family left u, in the desert for 10 hours. what would have passed in her little head? my mom left me! they don't love me. psychological evaluation is emergently needed to deal with the post traumatic syndrome as with the trauma itself.

Unfortunately many people tend to learn life’s lessons the hard way at the expense of their children.

“It will never happen to me”!this is the attitude of some parents and this needs to be changed.

Are there really any excuses for putting the life of a child at risk?

it may another case of demand & supply :

if it's a single child, you pay more attention but if otherwise, a few may be missing for 2.5Kms :(

As observed, not all but some parents are more attentive on socializing and among other things rather than their own childrens. As an example in Al Matar Qadeem children and teens are roaming around making annoyance, fooling expats, trashing and misbehaving. Seeing them shows what values they are receiving from their parents or maybe non at all.
