The circular crater, which measures 34.04km in diameter, has been named Dukhan, reported The Peninsula.
The name was adopted and approved by the International Astronomical Union (AIU) on November 26, 2012.
There are many missions that have been studying Mars since the 1960s, and many countries have applied for naming craters on the planet.
Among Gulf countries, only Qatar and Oman have craters in Mars named after cities. Crater ‘Dank’ is named after a place in Oman.
While Degana, Bhor and Broach are named after Indian cities, Ehden is a Lebanese town. Chaman and Gwash are in Pakistan while Camiling is in Philippines and Bam is a town in Kermān province of Iran.
