Firms flouting summer working hours to be named and shamed
It is not exactly state secret that the country is passing through one of the harshest summers in recent times. To protect outdoor workers from the intense heat, the government came out with special timings for them.
But as the ancient adage goes, ‘rules are made to be broken.’ In fact, there have been several complaints that certain companies have been flouting the rule deliberately.
Such companies will do well to be careful as authorities have decided to name and shame companies who fail to adhere to the rule of law.
HE Dr Issa bin Saad Al Jafali Al Nuaimi, the Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs, has warned companies of stricter punishment for violating the rule related to working hours in open sites during summer.
“It’s important that all companies comply with the standards to protect the health and safety of workers in the country,” The Peninsula quoted the Minister as saying.
“Firms that continue to violate the law will face stricter punishment and we’ll announce their names publicly in case violations are repeated,” he added.
The ministry last month shut down 60 work sites for three days for violating the ministerial decision No. 16 of 2007 regulating summer working hours.
The law prevents work in open areas from 11:30am to 3pm from June 15 to August 31. The penalty could be as severe as closing the violating facility for up to one month.
There have been complaints that some companies are forcing workers to work in the heat to meet contractual commitments and complete projects as planned.
Let see if they will include if the company is run by Sheik.. Hall of Shame indeed if not.
