India to demonetise Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 notes starting midnight

Indians living in Qatar, please advise your family and friends living back at home to immediately deposit all their Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currencies at the nearest bank as early as possible.

In a move that took the nation by surprise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tendered the two denominations of currencies as invalid starting midnight tonight.

The currency notes of these denominations can be deposited at post offices and banks from November 10 until December 30, he said. You would need to carry your Aadhaar card and PAN card for exchange of these notes.

After that date, the currency notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 would be only paper, with no value, said the Prime Minister in his address to the nation. He added that the move was essential to ‘fight the disease of black money.’

He also announced that Rs 2,000 denomination would be introduced for the first time.

ATMs will not work on November 9 and in some places on November 10 as well. People can use the old currency for 72 hours at government hospitals. However, petrol pumps will have to keep every single entry of cash transaction with 500 and 1,000 notes till November 11.

What do you think of this move?
