Move to tax carbonated drinks in the GCC based on its sugar content?

Informed sources have told Zawya.com that a proposal is being considered to impose graded fees on carbonated drinks according to the percentage of sugar as part of selective tax, which the Gulf states intend to apply in 2018.

The General Secretariat of the council will study the experiences of other countries in this regard.

PepsiCo. has sent a note in this regard to the authorities concerned for consideration and includes reducing the calories in all its drinks in the region's markets, according to reports in the local media.

The company suggested awareness campaigns for consumers about healthy eating habits in the coming years, as well as providing enough information to consumers about drink ingredients, according to the best international practices.

It also suggested launching campaigns to promote products with low sugar levels.
