People will have to shell out more for petrol and diesel in the country as prices went up for the fifth month in a row.

Fuel prices will go up by 5 dirhams a litre for petrol and 10 dirhams a litre for diesel in Qatar in February, according to information released by Qatar Petroleum.

The price of 95-octane super petrol will be QR1.90 a litre in February, compared with QR1.85 in January, reported Gulf Times.

Meanwhile, premium grade petrol (91-octane) price will go up by 5 dirhams and will cost QR1.85 per litre in February compared to QR1.80 in January.

Price of diesel will increase by 10 dirhams in February. It will be QR1.85 a litre as against QR1.75 in January, reported The Peninsula.

This is the highest ever price for petrol after the Ministry started pegging the fuel prices to the international market.

rainbow77: a few points to help you understand :-)

- Qatar is more gas rich not oil rich

- generally, richer countries have higher prices than poorer countries

- fuel prices are revisited regularly in most countries, its just new for us here.

- fuel previously was subsidised here like many other countries; but with the global economic slowdown and lower crude oil prices, most countries have had to reduce some of the perks enjoyed by their people and find ways to increase their own revenues.

- the cheapest fuel in the world right now is venezuela at 65 dhs/ litre; priciest is iceland at 8 rials/ litre; global average is 4.2rials/liter.

- qatar still sells the 11th cheapest fuel in the world and within the gcc, only Kuwait is cheaper.

hope that helps :-)

Really can't digest why an oil rich country needs to revisit the petroleum prices every month :-(

haha i haven't complained much until now because having spent my whole life here, I have enjoyed the good old days of the peaceful quiet qatar lifestyle and filled up land cruisers for under 50 rials and lived in huge apartments on the corniche for 2500/month; so i'm ready to put up with some pain and higher costs now that there are exponentially more people here and the government has its hands full; but really hoping the fuel won't go too much higher; i'd be ok with it up to 2 qr/litre. My car has a 70 litre tank and I would not mind up to 150 for a fill up considering my parents only paid under 50 rials for many years to fill up their much bigger cars; but beyond that would start to hurt haha i love driving and frequently head out for long late night drives so yes that's there; I wish for a reform where the government also pegs salaries to some sort of local cost of living index and forces employers to be more generous; just like they're pegging the fuel to the international price index; the qatar government is very proactive and involved with its residents but the employers and companies are definitely not and i feel the government should take them to task and teach them to behave lol; here's hoping :-)

Really concerned over the rising petrol prices, becoming hard to afford, and excessively cutting my travel and entertainment...
