Qatar reports rise in traffic violations
The Traffic Department refers about 250 cases of violations every month to the public prosecution, showing that irresponsible behaviour of a section of motorists is on the rise.
Captain Khaled Mubarak Al Kaabi, Head of cases follow-up at Traffic Department, said the cases are mostly related to serious road accidents and over speeding of more than 180 kilometres per hour.
Speaking to magazine Majallat Al Muroor, Al Kaabi said that some cases also related to driving under influence of alcohol and drugs, driving without licence, reckless and stunt driving and major accidents causing severe injuries.
The cases which cannot be solved amicably are referred to the court. If the cases are not of serious nature then the department tries to solve the cases amicably, he said.
Increasing population is putting pressure on the traffic management system. Close to 10,000 vehicles hit the roads every month in Qatar.
According to the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (MDPS) data, 9,853 vehicles were registered in May this year compared to 9,937 in April.
Al Kaabi said that traffic jams in the country have a strong positive co-relation with road accidents. The cases of accidents increase when there are more traffic jams.
The maximum number of complaints received by the department are related to traffic jams and these complaints are mostly filed by expatriates.
The traffic department has many other modes of punishments, said Al Kaabi. One is to detain the vehicles of serious violators for a few days and referring their cases to the court. Motorists are detained in the cases where the victim either dies or is severely injured.
In case of driving under the influence of alcohol, finger prints of the drivers are stored in the database after which their cases are sent to public prosecution.
When a case comes from investigation section, the department thoroughly checks the case and asks for required documents before referring case to the court.
The follow up section refers cases which come from investigation section of the traffic department, he added.
Rise in the traffic is also leading to jump in traffic violations in Qatar. According to the 17th edition of Qatar: Monthly Statistics bulletin released by MDPS, traffic violations increased by four percent in May this year compared to April this year.
A total of 145,182 traffic violations were registered in May 2015, up from 139,662 violations in April this year.
Al Kaabi urged motorists to comply with traffic rules and behave responsibly on the road to ensure safety of other commuters. [The Peninsula]

Two days ago, near LULU airport, even after red light one of porch car who is behind me was honing and lighting me behind. When i moved other side, he drive through red light and hit a big car just 50 meters in front of me.. After few seconds when traffic light open i saw him, he was fighting with other car driver about damage..... i simply drive my car safe with smile..
Baloon tyres Hahaha.. they are SO CALLED "Banned in Qatar" but riders are getting it through nearest saudi areas & Police is just behaving like a spectator. Nothing will work even dashboard cameras, until Police is Highly Impartial & counteractive. most of themselves & their relatives are offenders undercover. :D
I like this one
"You drive without a license. You get your car crushed and yourself deported"
Tech services: I run my Kia on slicks and have no problems wit grip.
The key issue is that strong measures must be taken with offenders - You drive without a license. You get your car crushed and yourself deported.
Cause an accident through dangerous driving - go straight to jail and pay compensation to the victim.
As Knor said, we should start using Dashcam technology like in Russia and all ... so that people can report to Police with evidence ... Also, police should Ban the Land cruisers with thick tires like balloon tires which doesnt have any kind of grip on road ... now its a trend in between land cruiser owners ...
On the road , all are same .... whether it is a Qatari or expatriate , all r humans only ... no one has extra power or rights to do whatever they want .... Authorities should take some actions upon reckless drivers ....
Most of the traffic violators are the SUV, Sports Cars drivers. These drivers harasse other drivers specially when it comes to priority! They feel as driving the best cars means that they have special priority. They don't give a damn about other vehicles. They feel the road belongs to them. I have witnessed many Landcruisers driving sideways from a service road to extreme left to make a U-turn! These drivers they don't over speed, they fly and zigzag on the road to make other road user's heart leap to their mouths. Find a better way to control them.

maybe it is time to require that all vehicles must have a dashcam and the traffic dept will accept the videos as evidence against all reckless drivers to be use in the court of law on the process wither they can continue to have the license or revoke it . because fixed high-tech cameras won't stop those drivers that can afford by simply just paying the fines.
