Several roads go under water after heavy downpour in Doha

In scenes reminiscent of the old Kevin Costner movie Waterworld, several parts of Doha roads went underwater after rains lashed the city on Saturday evening.

The rains, which started slowly enough in the morning, slowly gained in intensity and it was pandemonium on the roads and underpasses. Despite it being a weekend, people rushing to get home before the downpour grew heavy made traversing on the road difficult.

Many roads in low-lying areas around Qatar got waterlogged after the thundery rains. Qatar’s meteorological department has cautioned residents of further rain and mayhem on Sunday.

Several reports stated that malls around the country, including Villaggio and Landmark, sprung leaks after the heavy rain. A section of Safari Mall in Abu Hamour lost power. Though the malls were evacuated, many people were found milling around. No injuries or deaths have been reported anywhere in the country.

The Abu Hamour area in Doha received the highest rainfall in the country – 35.3mm - until 5.30pm. Al Shahaniya was next with 27.3mm, followed by the Doha International Airport area with 23.3mm.

Though the country sees very little rains every year, waterlogging due to inefficient drainage system is a constant problem. People find it an inconvenience to enter their homes as the roads leading up to their place are under water.

The authorities have deployed tanker lorries to mop up the rainwater, but given the enormity of the problem, things are not going to change anytime soon.

Please be careful out there on the roads, people!
