A minor scuffle broke out between a group of workers and security guards at the Sheraton Hotel renovation site yesterday in which at least one worker was injured.

The Ministry of Interior said the worker suffered minor injuries and was given treatment at the site.

The Ministry said a scuffle broke out between two groups of workers and when guards tried to intervene, a fight ensued.

The security guards were Nigerians while the workers were from Nepal and Pakistan. They were employees of UrbaCon Contracting and Trading, the main consultant on the project, and a UAE-based subcontracting company.

The scuffle took place around noon. Workers were seen shouting and hitting. The police reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Investigators from public security agencies launched a probe to find out what exactly had happened.

Videos of the scuffle posted on a website meanwhile showed some workers going on a rampage and attacking portacabin offices at the project site.

Bad situation all the way around. Our beloved prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, "Allah has made some of your brothers as slaves under your care. So whoever has his brother under his care, then let him feed him from his food, and let him clothe him from his clothes. And do not give him a duty he can not bear, and if you give him a duty he can not bear, then assist him with it.” [Jami at-Tirmidhi]. I was truly saddened by the behavior and language of people capturing this video. I believe at one point, the women called a worker "dog". May Allah give us all guidance so we could behave in a way that is in alignment with teaching and character of prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his companions. Ameen.

Khalliwalli: If you stand on your two feet rather than your head, you will be able to think better and write something sensible.

Isnt Urbacon under a member of the ruling family. Riot Police buses with the police sitting in the buses? Treat people as humans, specially the poor laborer, they are here for yours and our benefit.

Sorry, struck a nerve.

These companies break so many laws when they treat their Asian laborers like slaves. It's terrible, and they expect them to work for over 10 hours a day in Ramadan. So sad.

The authorities should make the Sponsor and Managers of the company sit (Just sit) out in this weather between 9 and 11 am. to get an idea of how the workers feel.

I hope they do not get deported or jailed. Puts weight to the way, some sponsors and managers treat their subordinates. The laborers are also human.

God bless us all.

I know how I feel after sitting in an air conditioned office and get into my oven of a car. By the time I reach my destination, the ac has cooled but then again, out in the hot sun.
