How did you get your job?

As an American living in Washington, DC as a graduate student(International Commerce & Policy) I'm very interested and determined to make my way to Qatar. However, I'm having some trouble finding a variety of recruiting agencies, which I assume is the best way to go. As far as jobsinqatar.com (a subsidiary of Dubaijobs.com), I haven't come across any other way of effectively finding/applying for positions within the Marketing field (B.S. in Business Marketing). It will be interesting as well as helpful to hear how many of you were able to relocate to the region, or share information for other seekers. So I submit this question to you all at Qatarliving.com....

How did YOU find YOUR position?

Yes you are right, the problem is I don't have any friends or relatives who works in Qatar.

Well, in general, this is a great country with lots of opportunities.

However, quite a large proportion came for a job, not for a career.

I thought that iam the one, who struggle to find a job here, but just now i discover this site and i realize that iam not the only one. Well iam European-Greek man (probably this is not an advantage) and iam living here for 5 months approximately and iam desperately seeking a job in accounting field but iam very disappointed. So i started to look for a job in another section. So at present i spend my time reading and improve my English although the time passing by very slow when you don't have to do something really interesting.

I believe the best is to come to the country.

For some reason, I started looking for a job a few months ago. This was not really succesful and I did not receive many feedbacks from my online applications (just 3)

I came with my suitcase and a few dollars, met some people here and there, and signed my contract 2 weeks later.

You have millions of people willing to move to Doha, but only a few actually doing it. Just try, you may have nothing to lose

Mmyke - Great tip, I've been using that exact tactic

Dhey - very interesting story, hopefully she found some luck shortly after you did!

Qatarisun - Don't we all wish to get intoxicated and happen to speak (with the least bit of slurring) to someone who offers you a new position in a far away land! What a dream!

Shapil - I don't believe searching for positions one is qualified for is a waste of time, but I do agree networking is very important. I believe the figure is 70% of jobs are found through networking!

so create a waasta or "Guan Xi" first, then leverage it and then unwind it and voila you will have your real dream job. I have been working in different countries including Qatar because they could not find anybody else willing to do my job :)...but seriously if in my view if you want to land a good job here then start networking. Websites are waste as good jobs never even reach there.

First time i came to qatar in February 2006 for 12 days to visit my ex... i kindda liked the country... then one day I was in Toronto attending some party, got completely drunk, and remember saying to some fellow which i have met first time in my life, that i started getting bored, and need some real change in my life.. i remember him asking me what's my occupation... well.. max I could imagin him offering me a one night stand... but.. i didn't think he will take it so seriously and with such care.. :) couple of weeks later i got a call from his uncle in Kuwait, and 1 week later i got the air ticket to Kuwait, where the head office of some company was located, and i was invited to visit this company, and i was told that if i liked it, i could stay...I spent 3 weeks in Kuwait, and decided that if i stay in Gulf, i want to work in qatar, where at least my ex lives. This uncle had brunches of his company all over Middle east, so it was not a problem..I went back home, quit my job there, rented out my house and came to Gulf with two light suit cases... Well, later I have left this company, as i didn't really like my job.. i got my next real Job in Qatar without any help or "wasta", only on the competition basis, and only due to my personal and professional achievements, education and experience...

Please get back to me soonest with your bank account information so I may proceed expediciously and we con complete our business. am01778, please just never do what loveson709 has suggested. It will lower your image as a professional dramatically! Especially don't post some desparate add in the Gulf-Times!

Best way is to go either through the agences, who is usually looking for the "big sharks"/high professionals, or to apply directly on the web sites of the particular Company. All largest Companies recruit their staff either via Job agences, or advertise their Jobs on their web sites.

I cannot imagine, some Qatar Petrolium would read "Job Wanted" section in Sunday "Gulf times" to recruit some Head of Marketing Department. What a nonsense!

By Happy Happy• 19 May 2010 01:57

....am01778, you could, or you may apply first in as many places, and when you're called for an interview, you may decide to pay a visit.

are you sure you've got yourself an offer ..This way?

well I don't doubt .. anything that works for you.. however I learned some kool tactics that smart MBA's used in USA.

one guy replaced the building cleaner to climb up to 23rd floor and pasted his A3 sized cv onto the chariman's window. (His first task after hiring, was to remove it without leaving a trace).

more interestingly one guy booked first class return ticket from NY to Lonon, wore his best outfit and submitted his cv to the fellow passengers (elite class guys), while discussing briefly his job prospects and deliverables. he secured 3 positions on his way back.

bottom line .. where there's a will, there's a way.

however, when you limit your scope to one point agenda (getting hired for doha), life can't be easier :(((

bea_7 - I appreciate your insight/perspective being from HR. It was mentioned earlier to utilize the Gulf times as well, which I'm using as a tool, thank your for stressing its importance. My last option would be to find a US company here and transfer abroad, however I'm striving to not go that route at the moment, only because I have not completed my Masters yet, thanks!

Happy Happy - I'm on Bayt, but will check out gulftalent as well/also I know my experience is not much and know the salary I should get (and its not exaggerated by any means), thanks for the info!

Nsata - having lived in the GCC for 6 years, I already know the pros/cons fairly well, and I am well aware of the situation I am trying to get into. My reasons to return to the GCC go beyond the 'tax free' rant and chant by others (who most have never been to the region and leave shortly after). Family, friends are still within the region, & I personally enjoy being in the middle east, and will hope to eventually be in the GCC for a long period of time in later years. As far as picking Qatar, through economic research I am impressed with the direction Qatar is taking as a country (through government, business, development means, etc) and it's location (to neighboring countries) is ideal for me.

And believe me, I've been looking consistently, but I may not be looking in the right places...hence this forum

I found recruitment agencies to be a waste of time, and I really don't mean to offend anyone working in a recruitment agency.

Majority of them do not read CVs, but use semantic based IT systems to compare your CV to client's job description. So you would be extremely lucky to get one to even look at it. Unless, of course they are looking for fresh graduates.... Not to put you off, but you do have to remember that the majority of graduate jobs here will be reserved for young Qataris (this is their home).

As a fully qualified and experienced HR person, I would advise you to:

1. post your CV on Gulf Talent just in case you get lucky to be spotted, but don't waste too much time on that web site

2. view Gulf Times classifieds regularly and apply for any jobs that you think are suitable (available in PDF format online daily)

3. simply work through local yellow pages looking for international organisations, and just send them your speculative CV with a good cover letter.

One more way... apply for graduate jobs in US with big international companies, and see if you can come down on a transfer.

Good luck!

....am01778, many of us here had no connections whatsoever, it's not like we're frantically dying to work in the Arab Gulf. It just so happened, and was not even in the plan at all.

Best of luck to you, being a fresh graduate is not exactly a positive point, so don't over exaggerate in estimating your salary.

dear am01778,

for your own good, you should be very clear and specific about your top 3 reasons why in the first place you'd like to come to GCC and why specifically Qatar?

are you ready to do any job, I mean ANY job if you're paid good?

have you calculated your odds of landing onto a wrong side of the street?

Not that I don't want to encourage you to come to Doha, you are most welcome my friend. But knowing your life/career ambition and reasons for the move is quite important "atleast for me" besides the romance with TAX FREE salary.

as i use to say, job searching is an 18 hours job itself. if you're still looking, may be you are not trying enough :)))

cheers & good luck
