Malaysian journalist Claudia Theophilus killed in Lebanon
By KAMATCHY SAPPANI

Malaysian Claudia Theophilus, 42, a producer with Al-Jazeera English Online, was killed in Baakleen, in the mountains of Lebanon at 2.30am (Lebanon time) on Saturday.

She was with two other friends. One of them reported the matter to the police who alerted the Malaysian Embassy in Beirut.

Local police have detained the two people who were with her for questioning and initial police investigations indicate that it may have been a mishap.

When contacted, Ambassador Ilango Karuppannan confirmed she was shot dead but said that details remained sketchy.

He said that her body had been taken to a hospital in Baakleen and an autopsy had been done.

“We are on the way there now,” he told The Star.

He said that she had arrived in Lebanon on Jan 28 to visit her friend whom she had apparently known since 2010.

He said that, according to police investigations, she and her two friends had been playing with rifles when one of it went off and the bullet killed her at about 8.30am Malaysian time on Saturday.

Claudia Theophilus was a producer at Al-Jazeera English Online based in Doha, Qatar. She has worked for The Sun and Malaysiakini.

Baakleen is a city located in Mount Lebanon, Chouf District, 45km southeast of Beirut.

The reason could be quite simple.

The Lebanese guys were trying to impress a female with their firearms and an accident occured.

What was she doing in Lebanon at this time?

Was she there on some spying mission or was she involved in the smuggling of journalists, arms, terrorists into Syria but then was intercepted by counterrevolutionary agents?

We all know of AlJazeera's direct involvement in the destabilization of Syria.

I suspect she was up to no good or got caught up in a messy business...

Playing with rifles? She must have been playing with fire and got burned as a result...

"Playing" with firearms...very odd! Where did they get them from? Why did they have them? For what purpose? Did they have papers to allow them to have firearms?

Very odd all this !

When I go on vacation I go shopping, swimming and sightseeing...but hey, that's me...;/

yes. just a suggestion tho. i know nothing about her, nor have any evidence. she may have been shot by accident while being trained to handle firearms before heading to syria.

again, one has to wait for more info, but can't discard that theory.

Some papers are saying that she was with two Lebanese guys and they were paying with firearms - when she was accidently shot..

Are you suggesting that she could be covertly trying to enter Syria ?

too early to tell. many journalists (she was a web designer not a journalit) use lebanon to cross into syria. and many get some firarms training.

saturday night... 2 am...
