I have heard ( i hope this isnt true) that the babies which are born out of wedlock here in qatar are taken away from there mothers.

is this true and what happens to the babies? What happens to a lady out here who gets pregnant out of wedlock? I believe they get taken to the courts? is this true? Can anyone shed some light on this as i cant seem to get this off my mind about what happens to them

thnx

i know aomeone who had a baby (twins) out of wedlock in the 60's. it was all hush hush. no one in the family knew till the other year when there was a knock at the door. it was a shock for most of the family and upset as no one had any idea and i know another where the grandmother has brougt the kid up and the person who they thought was the sister is really the mother. all this seems to do when it comes out and it always does is split the family. today is doesnt seem to matter if you are not married. girls here have baby's to get a house, £500 from sure start. some people say they are better of not living with baby father money wise. they get child care paided for ect... some people cant help it that they have spilt from the father but a lot do it for the money and not having to work

Bastard is a very pejorative term and is not used except as a swearword. Strictly speaking it does mean illegitimate but is never used in that context.

Bastard nowadays means an unpleasant and mean person - always a male. The female equivalent is bitch.

at first, i think it was a definition, but today its used more as a curse.

I think children born out of wedlock are called bastards right?

Why is that?

By han19• 5 Feb 2007 16:02

but this is not the only place that suffers stigma and mistreatment of children out of wedlock, its a situation you will notice in most third world countries. its got nothing to do with laws.

maybe in another country the women wont be held in confinement and the child seperated from her, but in places like asia, the society refuses to accept the child born out of wedlock, it is sad but this is true.it is like a curse and the women and the child are like prisioners of their own homes.its just mother and child for one another, in rural places, a woman will not be able to find a suitable job to look after her and her baby's needs due to this stigma.

the basic human nature and human tolerance has to change for bettement of the society.

here in islam, atleast its been clearly stated not to indulge in activities that can lead to this result, else they can be punished. the warning is clear to take note of.

I totally agree with han19, this is an Islamic country and everyone coming here must be aware of that, and respect that, if not they can stay in their own countries. But on the other hand humanity and justice are universal unwritten laws that must be respected also. There is no justification for any stigma or misstreatment for the innocent babies, and it is totally unacceptable to punish people commiting the same action by different ways according to their nationality, gender or race.

charmed, this happens in most countries. over here they are caught and placed in confinements. in other countries too, the mothers probably give up the babies themselevs since they cant afford to take care of them.

i dont think girls as young as 12 have babies here, even if they do, we wont come to know of it.in all probablilty the baby might be medically terminated....cant say for sure.any other nationality, they may leave the country and go someplace else to have the baby.

over here young girls having kids with different dads wont arise because of the segregation between men and women, most schools too are exclusively for either sex. families here are very sheltered and over protective....you wont really hear such stories go around here. well atleast not yet.

its extremely nice of novita to post those details, i do hope we will be able to help them in our own way.

If you go back a little further than 50 years. Single pregnant women in the UK were locked up in institutions.

Some were still there in the 1960's and had been in for 50 years.

that this can happen, but im betting this happens in a lot of other countries too - lets not forget 40-50 years ago in the west pregnant women went to visit their " aunt" to hide there condition. I dont think its right thou to seperate the babies and the mothers and treat them in such a way - but then i think about all the girls in the west who get pregnant at young ages and have heaps of kids by the time there 18 with different dads i knew a girl who was pregnant at 12 - do they have probelms out here like we do in the west? But what happens to these chidlren when they are older and grown up what happens to them then?

thanks novita for the info i have already mailed to see what i can do as well to help! lets all help!

Regardless of the "crimes" of the mother, these babies are innocent and deserve all we can offer them.

to all in this discussion,

please dont over react. just remember this is a islamic state and fornication and adultery are punishable crimes, if you are caught, thats it then.

but sadly many women caught belong to the low income group who cant run away from the country and are in the detention centres, but most also are women who know the rules, have willingly indulged in the act leading to having a baby and have been caught. moreover most of our news is hearsay.when we dont know the real and complete story, then how can we comment and criticise?

before we start accusing the qatari masters who escape having carried out such crimes, come one.....dont tell me the rich people in other countries dont get away with their little evil deeds. its become a habit to crib about qatar and just point out the evil here.

If you want to put together one of the baby kits from Novita's email then hurry up and contact one of those ladies. They are delivering this week.

Are there any orphanages/childrens homes in Qatar? I have been trying to find this out for ages, to no avail. I wanted to do voluntary work with children, but no-one replies to my emails :(

if the babies are raised in foster care what happens when the babies turn into adults? how does this work with the women being married? can they get married and have a normal life? this is so sad, thank you han19 and everyone else for commenting on this its been on my mind for a long while now. if we could arrnage to send care packages to these poor ladies and help the babies out that would be so good - does anyone know about this?

Some years ago, a Gulf Air stewardess (Western) gave birth in the Gulf Hotel (now the Marriott in R.A.A.)

Gulf Air got her and the baby out before the authorities were aware (I don't know how they got the baby out with no documents) and locked up the stewardess. Having babies out of wedlock in Qatar is a very serious and risky business.

I just read a story in the paper not long ago about several mother's who are stuck in prison for almost 2 years now WITH their out-of-wedlock babies having to live in prison as well. They are currently still awaiting trial! It's such a sad situation to me. I do know of a lady who helps with donations for these babies if you want to help.

if you are qatari you probably go to another country and deliver in secret.then its upto youto come back with the baby into the country, and still keep the baby in the family.or you just stay out of the country.

if you are arab or asian expat, you run to your homecountry while the going is good.if you are caught then theres loud music to face, fine lashes and deportation.sometimes the lashes can be exempt.

it may be rare situations when the baby is taken away from the mother, dont worry nothing inhuman happens to the baby other than the baby being brought up in foster care paid by the country.

families are very close knit here, so such episodes will not be heard of in news, its all hush hush, but i am ready to believe that the mother and her parents probably decide on the course of action.

I'am not sure, but I guess as usual it will depend on your nationality....if you are a western they will pretend they don't know, and if you are Asian or Arab you will be screwed and kicked out of the country with your poor baby. However, If you are Qatari, I guess you will get killed :((((

I have heared lately about a philipina who got caught for adultry, the funny thing they didn't touch the American guy she was having an affair with, she was sentenced to prison, and later will be deported, while I bet that the American guy is already having another affair by now....
