Hate

Does anyone else find that QL is becoming a site that seems to intice hatred in people...

A number of users are attacking other users - doing things to deliberately provoke them.

Never in my 4 years on QL have I ever seen so much anger and hatred amongst users.

It is a worrying factor...

Too many unhappy people in Qatar, this is just my conclusion. The desert does this to you I guess....Doha is strangely welcoming, yet so hostile. Well, I'm being bitter today for specific reasons....yet, I cant help feeling how unreal this place is sometime. Just venting...

The problem is that each thinks he/she is right and is not willing to even consider the viewpoint of the other..

I would also agree with MD that society as a whole has changed and there is a real polarization of views / attitudes in the last eight years..

There are all levels of harassment. Some of what I have worried about in the past was probably nothing to be worried about (bygones as far as I am concerned). Others have actually posted extensively with my real name, position, employer and work phone number in threatening posts (which the mods have deleted as soon as they were notified).

The practice of pronouncing that a Muslim is not a Muslim is called takfir. It is annoying to me but more importantly, it is a great sin and we are told that those who practice it will face Allah's judgment.

an opinion, please by all means express it... but its the way they threaten when one doesn't agree with them, that is a worrying factor... How rude and personal they get - degrading, almost.... and oh man... judgemental...

PM and I are by no means friends, and even I somtimes think she is a little paranoid with the 'stalkers' she picks up... but lately, there are about 3 or 4 users that seem to be targetting her with regards to her being a muslim... that should not be tolerated - As long as I have known her, she has been a muslim, and when she speaks - she does speak sense... but people seem to take offence to her ideals about islam - they are the ones that become venomous - and start to cause problems.

As someone who has been the target of a great deal of hate being called CIA, Mossad, a muslim-pretender and a hypocrite, I know very well about the vitriol here on QL. The struggle in me is not to lower myself to the depths of my detractors and sometimes lately I have failed at that :-(

I don't like what is said, but it can be tolerated. I think what Xena is saying (and I don't want to speak on her behalf, so correct me if I'm wrong) is the level of hate/bitterness/vitriol in the way some people communicate on QL.

To be honest I don't really notice it anymore - I just scroll right past certain people's posts because I already know what they will be saying.

I'm torn between wanting much stricter moderators, which would make everything more pleasant for all the users, and for wanting free speech, which is something that most of us here would applaud.

It's my belief that most of the hateful posts are in clear violation of the community guidelines, and the mods would do the site a huge favor if they enforced them more thoroughly. You can have any point of view you like on QL, as long as you are polite.

I guess there are a lot of people out there who no one would give the time of day to, but on QL they feel like they have a soapbox from which to preach and scream. A sad reflection of them and their lives in the real world I guess.

... Xena is talking about a website mainly used by people who live in Qatar - hence it being called QatarLiving due to the fact it is a Qatari Website. Don't just go into Islam and hate of Islam and and and as that is NOT what is being discussed here. Seems like everything always diverts into Islam being hated (quoting nice_man) and the topic turns into chaos and bashing.

I personally think people who can't speak out loudly about frustrations, problems and other obstacles in life take it out on QL negatively by posting nasty, bashing each other, getting into conflicts or purely posting for the sake of increasing post numbers as if this is some kind of childish competition. These people would be much better off grabbing a shovel and getting their anger out by helping QAWS dig the rubbish away, as an example of productive and constructive work. It is time for those posters to actually think about what they post and behave their age - and specially ignore useless topics and posts.

JMHO... have a nice day everybody :)

a comment is always a comment, there is no point in arguing over a comment made by somebody, cause that is his/her viewpoint on that subject. What is happening here is that there are forums within forums.

everybody wants to prove themselves right! even a person starting a forum tends to spray pheromones around marking territory dictating rules and demanding people out of the thread.

PS: this is my opinion, it doesnot matter if no one agrees to this.

internet/forum manners are non existent in QL. during my stay here i've learn to just ignore the haters and mud slingers because they're simply not worth my time. i feel sorry for those who feel superior if they bash someone in an online thread. they probably have a loose screw on their heads or in real life they cowards so they do it in the comforts of a user ID.

tit for tat kind of thing. You foul someone naturally you get a dose of your own meds. But religious threads are good for 'FYI' basis, but it gets dirty and provocative because some moron starts to address the issue by his superficial and myopic views. It would be tricky though and challenging for the offended party: you answer with wit- assuming the moron gets your point- or you fall into his hole and play his dirty game.

Well I think the administrator could bring in some control of the users reported to be abusive. But again he would have to use his better judgement to understand if the user is abusive or not as some might simply report the user to be abusive because of his antipathy against the user

"face up" in person when you dont have much time? lol

i rather stay at home with my laptop, than meet bunch of crazy people in a small world of Qatar...

dont get me wrong, i have met few QLFilexpat once in their bowling event and that's it, that's only it... someone gave a problem eventually so i stopped mingling with anyone thru here anymore...

forums are meant to express opinion and experiences...

either whining or moaning...whatsoever... so other people may learn something from it... otherwise ignore it.

Threatening someone just because he/she doesnt agree with your opinion/expression is the WORST thing in forums.

just my two cents...

use QL properly - and it can be informative, but its not informative when people start to get nasty - one can express their opinions in a nice way - but don't be threatening when someone doesn't agree with you...

yes MD am aware I can do that, but its happening so much now days which threads to you avoid... even the most innocent ones turn nasty... how do you know that until you actually read it - I am not psycic to figure that out before I open it up...;-)

I agree with Xena, some posters turns nasty even to a simple remark and comment. it sure make a difference hiding behind a userID and punching the keyboards to their hearts delight. I wonder sometimes if they could just "face up" in person...hehehehe

Ms. Xena, i agree with you, that those users who THREATENS and say THREATENING words should be BANNED without WARNING.

As this might imply that QL is no longer safe anymore for people to express their opinion and share their experiences.

There should be an option somewhere, where we can inform the moderator that the user is somewhat threatened by another user, but provide the forum link as a proof, then request to block this user.

"there are far too many trolls on QL lately.... would love to clear them out - gotta love the ones that open up numerous accounts and then agree with themselves... "

i think its true, people come up like a gang of their own selves.

but in my opinion, what happens here is that most of people respond and react violently if they do not agree with a forum and someone's opinion. And when people disagrees they even attack below the belt, so the tendency is to retaliate below the belt as well, and so on and so forth... till the forum reach 4 pages...

I think QL is also a mirror of the society. It has changed, too. Friendliness and helpfulness have become rare incidents while in the 1990s here they used to be the norm.

By Xena• 23 Sep 2009 01:12

I have been reading some of the posts lately.... there are some users who deliberately provoke others into mud slinging matches... now I know that turning the other cheek is always the best option, but sometimes its hard for people....

I am really worried about some of the users and the way they become nasty and almost threatening - yes, it might be an internet forum, but I do believe where there is a will there is a way, and if they want to find someone they hate that much and bring harm to them, they will not have much trouble... Qatar isn't that big...

I don't know why mods aren't policing what's happening here - I do know that Qatari and Ahmed are really busy, so cannot always be watching... but I think that the mods need to bring these users to the site owners attention before something bad happens.
