TOKYO, May 27 -- North Korea vowed Wednesday to attack South Korea if ships from the North are searched as part a U.S.-led effort to stop vessels suspected of carrying missiles or weapons of mass destruction. It also declared that the truce that ended the Korean War in 1953 was no longer valid.

For anyone who hasn't been following the story, North Korea has been testing running short range missile tests and nuclear tests for over a week now, despite condemnation from the ENTIRE International community, including China & Russia.
South Korea has joined in agreement with Japan & the US to search any ships for WMD's, which of course has Kim Jong Il in an uproar.
What do you think of the situation?
Ive heard it in news that North Korea is building/testing a missile capable of reaching United States. They expect the missile will be completed in two weeks.

No, the Japs wouldn't care, but then again North Korea wouldnt' care about the Japs either.
My big worry here is not a prolonged war, it's Kim Jong Il firing a nuke at Japan just to do it before he dies, and screw the consequences.
I can't really see it escalating too far. The South Koreans seem to be taking a very pragmatic approach. The reality is that North Korea does not have the means of fighting a prolonged war and the USA is more than likely aware of all its nuclear threats / capabilities.
against them, I dont think the Japs would be too concerned about Korean casualties.
Which then brings some of the Asian countries into the fold, along with China and Russia.
It could get very messy very soon.

Having been to South Korea and seen the US troops first hand, there is no doubt that they would help as part of their various policies in the region.

I really don't think he does Mr. P. And the chances of the US nuking North Korea are pretty slim. Any fallout from a nuclear attack on North Korea would have a devastating effect on South Korea and it's population, so it just wouldn't be possible.
What will happen is what's happening in Iraq and what happend in Vietnam and the first Korea. A long drawn out confrontation with high casulaties on both sides. Difference is, the US cares about the casualties and North Korea doesn't.

In the past he hasn't MR. P, but as I pointed out, the man is dying. This is his last chance to make his mark. He's spent billions on gaining nuclear weapons while his people starved. Do you think he cares about annihilation?
No one in the West feels directly threatened by North Korea's nuclear weapons. The same cannot be said for Japan and South Korea.
But Kim Jong-il knows full well that a nuclear attack, anywhere, will lead to a counter-attack that would annihilate his nation.
Maybe, Obama should call his bluff.Dare him to press the button, in fact, double dare him and let him see what happens.He talks the talk, but does he walk the walk ?

I think the planes in Japan are to protect Japan in the event of Korea attacking.
Well the news today said the US doesn't plan to reinforce the 30,000 troops there...however...they could just be treading carefully. This isn't the brash, stupid former administration.

Tallg there are over 30,000 US troops stationed in South Korea. Not to mention the amount of foreign investement in that country. I don't think there's a nation that wouldn't come to their aid.
US would very likely respond if So Korea attacked. Question is how hard would they respond... and if they could get Russia and, believe it or not, China to jump in as well...

the thing is, KJI is not exactly the type of a leader who is sane, benign and reasonable. no one knows what he is thinking right now. and yup, he could easily trigger a war just so his name will be enshrined in history books. for a child not so wanted by his very own father, he might do just that.

If North Korea attacked South Korea, would anyone be likely to come in and help South Korea?
I still have many good friends in Seoul and I would be devastated if something happens. But this is the most aggressive I can remember Korea getting in recent history, so I'm worried....

Yeah no love lost between JPN and the whole Korean Peninsula... besides that this is like the last serious vestige of the cold war that has to be unwound I just hope we get out of it without a disaster.

Well I used to live in Korea and talked to a lot of Koreans (both Northern & Southern) about the situation. When I was there they said things were getting better and it was only a matter of time till the two joined. It was all dependent on Jong Il dying. The man is a despot in the truest form and unfortunately he's a powerful one. His hatred of Japan knows no bounds and it's no secret that he'd like to destroy the entire country. (So would South Korea for that matter :P )

Normally I would say that as well, since in the past this seems to be their way of getting aid while retaining their "honour."
However it's Kim Jong Il's recent health scares that worry me. This could be him taking his shot at getting into the history books as well...
I think this is North Korea's strategy to extract more concessions & International attention..
