Nepal assembly abolishes the monarchy, gives king 15 days to vacate palace

KATHMANDU, Nepal - Nepal's legislators abolished the monarchy and declared the country a republic Wednesday, ending 239 years of royal rule in the Himalayan country.

The newly elected assembly, led by the former communist rebels, adopted the resolution at its first meeting by an overwhelming majority. King Gyanendra has been given 15 days to leave his palace in central Kathmandu.

Across Kathmandu, young men marched with red flags as Nepalis celebrated what many see as the culmination of a two-year peace process with the rebels that began after weeks of unrest forced the king to restore democracy.

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) — The palace where Nepal's former king once lived will be converted into a museum that will offer the public a glimpse of royal life, including the ex-monarch's throne and a vintage car given as a gift by Adolf Hitler, the government said Monday.

Items on display at the museum will include valuable artifacts accumulated by the Shah dynasty in its 239-year rule of the Himalayan nation, according to Home Secretary Umesh Mainali. Officials hope the museum will be finished in six weeks, although an opening date has not been set.

DEMOCRACY-NICE START! :p

A bomb exploded near a mass rally in the capital being addressed by leader of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) -- former communist rebels who have emerged as the largest political party. No one was hurt in the blast, and police were investigating.

Morbid statistic, if one million Chinese are killed per year, their total population still rises.

Idealists - on paper the situation looks great everthing belongs to the people - but in reality everything belongs to the new government and their brothers and their cousins and their freinds and their girlfriends etc., etc.

So pray tell me where do the people belong here?

Take a look at DDR, Russia, Rumania, Hungary, Bulgaria what was left after the communists left - basically nothing what were they doing all thes years except exploiting foreigners or tourists (exchange of money where you could not buy anything for it)who were and are the poor in these countries certainlly not the big boys. Nepal with or without the King was and is poor - are changes expected?

Take the DDR as an example who had a bank full of money when he left Hoenecker of course not to mention HIS lifestyle behind the iron curtain.!!!

Oh and what about Burma? How is that faring with communism, from my perspective not to well at the present???

Food for thought I would say!!!!

Remember the Prague Spring, 1968

The western countries offered only vocal criticism following the invasion — the reality of nuclear standoff in the Cold War meant the western countries were in no position to challenge Soviet military force in Central Europe. A more pronounced effect took place in Communist Romania, where the leader , already a staunch opponent of Soviet influences and one to have declared himself on Dubček's side, held a public speech in Bucharest on the day of the invasion, depicting Soviet policies in harsh terms. While Romania engaged briefly on the same side of the barricade as Josip Broz Tito's Yugoslavia, the alliance was purely conjectural (as romanian leader was already proved to be opposed to the principle of a Socialism with a human face). It did however consolidate Romania's independent voice in the next decades, especially after romanian leader encouraged the population TO TAKE UP THE ARMS in order to meet any similar maneuver in that country: he received an enthusiastic initial response, with many people who were by no means communist willing to enroll in the newly-formed paramilitary Patriotic Guards.

Dracula....Yes it is, but strange thing is that my country Yugoslavia was the only developed communist country. Tito was very strange player, he was the only one who was brave on 1948 to say to Stalin big NO. Old "good" Stalin was very angry and we didnt have any close relations with Soviets until beginning of sixties I think. Tito wanted good relations with both sides, West and East.
