think about what you said logically -"wrong. It is ideas you should respect"

Are you telling me you respect the ideas of Apartheid, Zionism, satanism, cannibalism, paedophilia etc?

I may not respect the 'ideas' of Christianity but I respect the right of others to believe in them - there is a big difference. Thus those same others can not expect to be immune from criticism or offence through some demanded respect.

And it was a quote from an article

:)

"Deaths in the Bible. God - 2,270,365

not including the victims of Noah's flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, or the

many plagues, famines, fiery serpents, etc because no specific numbers

were given. Satan - 10."

SN said "otq and others.....you believe what you will and the self proclaimed atheists believe in what they will..."

SN you have the right to believe in atheism and rightly your culture allows you that freedom. Although my way of life (Islam) is different from yours, my reference (the Quran) tells me 'There is no compulsion in religion'...and it also mirrors what you say but from a Islamic perspective;

"Say: O disbelievers! I worship not that which ye worship; Nor worship ye that which I worship. And I shall not worship that which ye worship. Nor will ye worship that which I worship. Unto you your religion, and unto me my religion."

It is the above injunctions which have allowed the Christian and jewish communities in lebanon, syria, morroco, egypt, yemen, etc to live in lands where the muslims are a majority and still practice their religion freely. By contrast where atheists have obtained absolute power (communist USSR and China and nazi germany), the consequences for those following any religion have been fatal.

specifically regarding faith and convictions. If a man was born from a virgin and walked on water and did many miracles, that what our faith is. Faith is being at peace with something you don't see and for the things to come as foretold! I don't know your personal conviction but if you want respect for your ideas, learn to respect yourself!

If you just quoted someone, then this posting is for him/her!

"All people deserve respect, but not all ideas do. I don't respect the idea that a man was born of a virgin, walked on water and rose from the dead.

This is not because of "prejudice" or "ignorance", but because there is no evidence for these claims. They belong to the childhood of our species, and will in time look as preposterous as believing in Zeus or Thor or Baal.

When you demand "respect", you are demanding we lie to you. I have too much real respect for you as a human being to engage in that charade.

But why are religious sensitivities so much more likely to provoke demands for censorship than, say, political sensitivities? The answer lies in the nature of faith. If my views are challenged I can, in the end, check them against reality. If you deregulate markets, will they collapse? If you increase carbon dioxide emissions, does the climate become destabilised? If my views are wrong, I can correct them; if they are right, I am soothed.

But when the religious are challenged, there is no evidence for them to consult. By definition, if you have faith, you are choosing to believe in the absence of evidence. Nobody has "faith" that fire hurts, or Australia exists; they know it, based on proof. But it is psychologically painful to be confronted with the fact that your core beliefs are based on thin air, or on the empty shells of revelation or contorted parodies of reason. It's easier to demand the source of the pesky doubt be silenced.

But a free society cannot be structured to soothe the hardcore faithful. It is based on a deal. You have an absolute right to voice your beliefs – but the price is that I too have a right to respond as I wish. Neither of us can set aside the rules and demand to be protected from offence. "

SN, your comments beg to differ. When you keep taking the piss out of someone, especially the Muslims on QL you are going to get this sort of reaction. Muslims take religion very seriously, and get extremely upset at any disrespect to their faith and Prophets. Even when this is explained to you, you continue to prod them, and then accuse them of being hateful? Were you expecting some other reaction? Thanks perhaps...

Well Said otq. I was about to respond to someone, then I remained silent. As otq said, those hate driven attackers on Islam always spread their hate on QL and call muslims narrow minded, loveless people etc. Someone among them are pretend to be muslims or about to convert (for some personal reasons)

Its been a while since i last checked out QL but not much has changed. The original post was simply informing of a lecture by a muslim speaker at FANAR. Was not preaching or forcing Islam down anyones throat...just informing.

Then the usual tag team of self proclaimed 'atheists' are the first to pounce with the usual stereotypical responses which are totally unrelated to the original post and then accuse the other side (muslims) of being narrow minded and aggressive. If you are not interested in Islam yourself, why intentionally antagonise others who might be? I suspect its insecurity.

To the muslims; guys you fall for the bait every time. Please do not lose your your adaab (manners), it is our identity. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) faced personal abuse, he remained silent. When lies were spread about Allah, he responded with reasoning but always with adaab. Our job is to convey the message only and it is Allah who turns the hearts.

Eco: Thanks for posting this small part from Open Public Lecture by Dr. Yousuf Estste. Hope you don't mind that i comment some of his statements.

"Sheik Estes said that, “Allah” is the same word used by Christian Arabs and Jewish Arabs in their Holy Books, centuries before Islam came. "It is on page one of Genesis in the Old Testament, the word “Allah” is repeated 17 times."

I belive that we all know that Allah means God in Arabic.

Just like we, Portuguese call him Deus. Nothing surprising on there.

"“Islam never preaches spreading the message of peace with a sword. Actually, there is no word for "sword" anywhere in the Quran, but you find it more than 200 times in the Bible.” "

Well, they don't use the word "sword" but shows hate, so violence and hate are present in all revealed books.

"Guard yourselves against the Fire prepared for disbelievers, whose fuel is of men and stones.--2:24

1. Don't bother to warn the disbelievers. Allah has blinded them. Theirs will be an awful doom. 2:6

2. Allah has sickened their hearts. A painful doom is theirs because they lie. 2:10

3. A fire has been prepared for the disbelievers, whose fuel is men and stones. 2:24

4. Disbelievers will be burned with fire. 2:39, 90

5. "Guard yourselves against a day when no soul will in aught avail another, nor will intercession be accepted from it, nor will compensation be received from it, nor will they be helped."

There will come a day when Allah will refuse all prayers and help no one. 2:48

6. Allah brags about drowning the Egyptian army. 2:50"

Please, don't take it as an attack to faith.

Jesus will come at a time when the whole world is at war,” he said. “He will lead his people to victory and restore peace. The return of Jesus will bring so much tranquillity and calm to the earth beyond imagination. It will be so peaceful that lamb would lay down with the lion. Jesus’ birth was a miracle though not the biggest miracle on earth.”

“The creation of Adam and Eve (peace be upon them) are greater miracles than the birth of prophet Jesus, peace be upon him. Eve had no mother and Adam had no parents at all!

"Jesus' birth was definitely a miracle and he performed many miracles, even bringing a dead man back to life - by the permission of Almighty God. Allah was the One who actually cured the people with disabilities and diseases and this was to give credibility and proof for Jesus, peace be upon him, to show his people he was indeed the "Messiah" (Christ) who had been sent to them by Almighty Allah. We Muslims believe in these facts, however we believe that all of this was by Allah”

Sheik Estes said that, “Allah” is the same word used by Christian Arabs and Jewish Arabs in their Holy Books, centuries before Islam came. "It is on page one of Genesis in the Old Testament, the word “Allah” is repeated 17 times."

He rebuffed at the claims of Islam being spread by the sword by quoting from the source *(Quran),

“Islam never preaches spreading the message of peace with a sword. Actually, there is no word for "sword" anywhere in the Quran, but you find it more than 200 times in the Bible.”

I really dont get the "insult to Jesus" bit because the translation said "the".

The Prophet Issa (Jesus)PBUH is one of the most revered prophets of Islam and holds the highest respect amoung Muslims. Would it not be a bit off the mark to think that someone who cared enough to inform people of a lecture about Islam would in turn be insulting Jesus?

For the people who feel this is a geniune thread and actually care about the content, coming in here to troll and throw insults is demeaning and childish at best. Before anyone says that it is an open forum and everyones entitled to an opinion I am sorry to say, the garbage flying around this thread is hardly that.

A stupid discussion about a stupid spelling/translation mistake...

As Muslims, we don't think we have a different Jesus to say THE Jesus meaning our Jesus, and not yours.

Arabic uses THE (AL) in most words...

This is a lecture about the Islamic version of the return of Christ near the end of time. (From my physics, I believe that the time dimension will end, and that's the reason for the infinite after-life)

We believe he was not killed but "lifted" up to heaven.

We believe he is still alive.

We believe he will come back to lead all the believers, as a Muslim leader.

I don't know what it is with supernurse, she seems quite aggressive today.

Just logged on to Qatarliving and happened upon this thread. To be honest, I'm a little surprised at the vitriol and silliness.

I have heard the man speak at a couple of lectures and found him warm, congenial and thought provoking..

So, rather than bitching here. Why not go to the lecture, find out what he has to say, and then armed with some background have a really great debate..

Chill out girl.

After the direct insult on Jesus Christ, i started to wonder, how many Hypocrites could fit in Heaven.

In the other hand, The rapture has not arrived yet. Of course some of the personalities in this forum, would love to put their fingers on you. Like always they are right and we are wrong, only on this part of the world, they would reach that assumption.

I did not know about having a second brain named "Anally", always splashing shit out and is short of retentiveness. That is such a malarious and vicarious analogy.

No disrespect to the Islamic community, I'm going to write, what is on my heart at this point.

I don't accept or agree with the following Heading, "The Return of the Jesus." Jesus is sacred as much is Muhammad.

It is totally a blunt attack on Christianity and its values. Jesus is revered by many millions of Christians world wide and it is consider by millions of Muslims as one of the Prophets.

Respectfully to all my Muslims, If I would wrote: "The return of the or that Mohamed," then I would have a mob ready to stone me to Death!

Instead of becoming a violent person; I'm going to pray for the it Doctors Salvation.

As Jesus Christ said: If someone slaps you in hate, you give him the other face cheek.

I got only two face cheeks to turn around, my third one will be "my own prefer method of retaliation."

Respectfully one irritated Pope......

cUTEYDOG: i fully agree with you just want to add that when catholics were following their religion blindly, a lot of injustices happened mainly when the Inquisition was allowed on those countries and people would accuse someone they hated or that had jealous from a neighbor or any other person of being "Satanic" and the people who were accused were tortured if they didn't confessed "the crime".

People should do a research about Galileo and the Inquisition.

Not that old chesnut about science and the Qu'ran. It is a new idea, and should be dropped quickly, as it is one of the easiest proofs of the falability of the Qu'ran. I would not mention it again because some muslims might do a little reseach and come to some shocking conclusions.

but then again....if you want to dig your own grave...carry on.

There are many reasons to believe its the Truth and only real religion if you have the patience and willingness to study the belief instead of writing it off without knowing it!

For starters read just a few of the Scientific facts mentioned in Qur'an 1400 years back, discovered in recent past:

http://www.islamreligion.com/category/34/

Logical Proofs:

http://www.islamreligion.com/category/116/.

The links give u a insight into Islam, which I am sure u wont read since I have seen your fear of Islam!!!

you won't read, you won't read, because cowards love to find a easy way out by not exploring the truth for the fear of losing their so called "freedom".......

They are Muslims for life, even if they wanted to and a few have tried, in some areas of the world they would be murdered!"

But if they go to a country "that allows freedom of religion some do leave Islam" and the ones that stay, behave completelly different compared with their ways on Islamic countries.

Your hate does not make a bits difference to Islam, the more hatred is spread against Islam, the faster is the growth of Islam, history is witness to it! Keep hating if u want to instead of studying the religion from right sources (instead of Anti-Islamic sources).

Born A Strong Christian

I was born into a very strong Christian family in the Midwest. Our family and their ancestors not only built the churches and schools across this land, but actually were the same ones who came here in the first place. While I was still in elementary we relocated in Houston, Texas in 1949 (I'm old). We attended church regularly and I was baptized at the age of 12 in Pasadena, Texas. As a teenager, I wanted to visit other churches to learn more of their teachings and beliefs. The Baptists, Methodists, Episcopalians, Charismatic movements, Nazarene, Church of Christ, Church of God, Church of God in Christ, Full Gospel, Agape, Catholic, Presbyterian and many more. I developed quite a thirst for the "Gospel" or as we say; "Good News." My research into religion did not stop with Christianity. Not at all. Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Metaphysics, native American beliefs were all a part of my studies. Just about the only one that I did not look into seriously was "Islam". Why? Good question.
