Row over stand-up urinals for women

BEIJING: Efforts by a university in Xian in northwest China to promote stand-up urinals for female students has come up for severe criticism by a section of pupils and their parents. The university says the purpose is to save water.

The Shaanxi Normal University built six such urinals, which it regards as "environmentally-friendly female washrooms" in its Yanta and Chang'an campus last April. But it was opened it for use last week after vetting student opinion.

The move has been criticized in Chinese internet blogs and discussion forums while local media reports suggest that very few female students at the university are using the urinals. Some teachers and student leaders are now involved in popularizing the concept and helping female students to overcome their shyness in using it.

Users of the female urinals are expected to hold a funnel made of stiff paper. The funnels are kept ready for use in one corner of the urinals. There are partitions in the urinals to help users avoid a sense of awkwardness while using it. The partitions are decorated with pink patterns to make the users feel comfortable.

Female stand-up urinals have been put to use during major public events in the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, Finland, Ireland and England since year 2000.

Local media reports said sign boards in the urinals said: "If every woman can urinate standing, Shaanxi Normal University can save 160 tons of water." The official People's Daily said conventional female urinals double the amount of water used for cleaning the male versions.

You can squat or hover above the seat.

You lost me .. don't you have to touch the seat when you sit on it or wipe it ?

By anonymous• 3 Oct 2010 14:34

True...but you don't actually have to touch the toilet seat.

Look at it another way. you wouldn't have to worry about dirty / missing toilet seats ..

By anonymous• 3 Oct 2010 14:24

Ok...Hmmm, I've peed in a lot of different toilets in my time, so I can't say I wouldn't try it. The only think that would bother me would be putting the funnel in and throwing it out. I try my best to touch as little as possible in public restrooms.

The use & throw paper funnel, new market, but it will generate lot of paper thrash. To make paper lot of trees have to be cut, loss of trees, less rain, less water. Chinkys trying to create market for nothing.

If they don't have any other choice, then the ladies - no matter how much they dislike the idea - will use the facility... :O)

So can we say that women are not liking the idea.

Well if the users aren't happy with it then hard to see it taking off.

It seems that the researchers have gone crazy and unable to think anything else to hog the limelight..There could be many ways to SAVE WATER except this FREAKY concept...

actually It's not just about the stupidity of the Chinese. Other countries are "testing" these types of urinals because they not only save water, but also space.

I would say that cultural aspects will have a bearing on their adoption.

If they want to save more watar, they should implement law to prohibits flushing the toilet every minute or imposed every Woman / Man should wear Diapers if they are in the office, which most of the Child do.....Instead of Flushing water in the TBowl every 5 Minutes. Diapers can be wear within 12 Hours.....

Better motivate the people not to take a bath more than once a week. As taking bath is much more than everything in regards to the consumption of water. Or let them take bath in the river or sea, avoiding usage of water.

Also, why not use the toilet like that in aeroplanes which flushes with very less water in high pressure rather than these stupid ideas?

The reasoning behind these She-Pees is to save water. It all seems a bit wierd to me and can't see many women adapting to them.

Ofcourse the ladies can answer that better..
